Its just not a pretty sight here today. :( My girl was treated to a GF meal out last night and had a great time. Only today she is paying for it. So, either the food wasn't gluten free or more likely, there was cross contamination.

So hard to see her feeling so very badly. And really nothing I can do to help. :( Her bottom is red and sore from so many loose stools. She can't eat and is just miserable.

This is the one of the hardest things to me about being gluten free - the cross contamination. Its just everywhere.

Oh, and to make a fun morning even better, my diabetic is SKY HIGH (and has an attitude to go with it). Oh, and my big girl is out for about 4 hours today.

Yeah, it's been a productive school day. Glad they can be home though and dealing with it here. Hugs to all of you!

Off to see if I can get Eliana to sleep.

Thanks friends.

Eliana is currently sleeping. Hoping it helps. At least it is a reprieve.

Now to help Joshua get his numbers in check.

Thanks for the hugs and sympathy and prayers!

Any of you that deal with this - any tips on helping it pass more quickly? Foods to avoid? Anything?

I was in a restaurant yesterday and a lady and her daughter came in. The mom asked right away for the manager (they were sitting right beside us), and explained that her dd was just diagnosed with a severe nut allergy, and she wanted to know how the restaurant would handle this and what their procedures were.

I was very intrigued, and kept listening in  The manager explained that they keep a locked box of special utensils that are cleaned and kept in the box for when they need to make special food, so there wouldn't be any cross-contamination. She went into the whole procedure and the manager even went back and read all the labels for whatever the dd might like to eat. It was great! I have a feeling not all restaurants do this, but this mom was very pleased. I was very impressed with the manager too.

I know it doesn't help this time, but hopefully for the next time. You might want to go back to the restaurant and ask about their procedures. That may give you a clue as to why she had such a severe reaction. My guess is cross-contamination as well, but it may be worth talking with the manager just in case you want to try that place again. My guess is your poor dd won't want to though :(

 I'm sorry your dd is having a rough day and hopefully she'll be feeling better soon.

 The longer I deal with food issues, the more I realise that eating out {with friends or in restaurants} isn't fun at all. I know soooo many people wrap memories and fun around food and I tell my family all the time I wish we didn't need food. It's true, I do wish it. But then again.. I also wish we could live without sleep soooo..

Praying both your children bounce back quickly.

Hugs to you and Eliana. We too are Gluten free and being gluttened is so miserable!

I take probiotics before I eat out and after to help mitigate any cross contamination.

But like Kendra ,the longer I have these issues the less I like eating out.

Prayers for you and the kids.

Blessings,

 Leslie I'm so sorry it has been such an awful day. And so sorry your little girl got glutened. :( I got glutened due to cross contamination not long ago and it was not fun. It is so frustrating! I wish I knew something to help make things better.

Thanks to all of you so much - for understanding and sharing and hugs and sympathy. I'm sorry that y'all understand - and thankful too!

Eliana's GI issues were much better today. Still sore, but able to eat. I think one of the challenging things for me is that I really don't know how else this is affecting her because she isn't able to communicate that with me. I've heard that reactions can last for several days and yet the GI are the most obvious ones, kwim?

Cindy - great advice on talking with them. I might have dh do that since he was the one out with the girls. They did seem to take good precautions, but still ...

Claire - can you share more about the probiotics? How much do you take? How does it help?

Kendra - I can absolutely understand why it would be easier not to eat out. I hate for her to miss that - but if all she is missing is being sick, then its really not so great.

If any of you have any other tips on avoiding gluten, I would love to hear them. Here or via email. We are mostly GF at home because I want this to be a safe place for her. I just want to do all that I can to prevent this - knowing that it still will happen at times.

Thanks again for the support and encouragement. Love you all!

Seeing this late. Sorry for your girl! We stopped school about 10 minutes in yesterday as Jacob's attitude after a corn reaction was terrible! It was clearly one of those days that was going to hurt our relationship and not teach us much about division if we went on.

We don't have celiac here, but the one thing I've noticed with my kids is that the more protein they get, the more quickly they pass the reaction. I just try to make sure they get square and healthy meals when they're reacting to something. When we're just snacking or having "kid friendly" food, it takes longer to pass.

As for avoiding corn contamination, I have learned to trust my gut in whether or not someone knows what they're talking about. If they answer much too confidently or quickly with a smile as if it's no big deal, I know not to trust them. :D I know that sounds terrible, but it's true!

Have you called the restaurant? I think I'd call and let them know and talk through their practices just so they can better serve their customers.
