This was SO sweet!!!!! We went to the small library close to us yesterday, and the librarian told us that they were having "tail tellers" tonight and that it happens 1x a month. A lady brings her therapy dog (a chocolate lab) to the library, and the kids can come and read to the dog. My kids were SO excited, so we had to go back tonight for the 3 big kids to have a turn reading. Since it's rainy and right before Christmas, only 2 other children came. The kids sat on the carpet right beside the dog and read to him. Sometimes he'd kind of just lay there, and sometimes he'd even put his head in their laps while they read. So sweet and such a great, encouraging idea

Does your library do anything like this? I'd never heard of it before and thought it was a great idea!

Yes! Our program is called Whiskers and Tales. They bring in several (5-8) dogs and often one very placid cat. ;) This program is phenomenal for reluctant readers who are animal lovers. My middle ds's reading improved by leaps and bounds when he was reading to the dogs and cat. I was so grateful for that program! Ds still occasionally goes and they all know him by name. He has his favorites that he reads to and he collects personalized bookmarks from each dog.
