from fruit flies
I put the bananas in the fridge, but I do not like refrigerated apples. I put plastic wrap over them and poked holes in it with a toothpick so they wont ferment, but really, what should I do?

I splurged and bought the very expensive Honey Crisps. I do NOT want them sullied by bugs or refrigeration.
Ooooh, I got honey crisps for the first time this year. :yum: I store all apples in the fridge, though...
We don't have a fruit fly problem (your putting bananas in the fridge is horrifying to me! ;) ), but do you have a basement? My friend puts her honey crisps in her basement (probably to keep her kids from eating them to fast). Or would the fruit flies just end up there, too?
Or, can you refrigerate them but take them out an hour before you want one so it comes to room temp?
I'm not much help, I guess!

Where are you keeping yours?
I paid $1.98 a pound for Michigan Honey Crisps at the grocery store. When they're gone, they're gone. My friend paid $1.50 a pound when she picked them herself over in IL. They last about a week over there before they're all gone. I missed it and hope I can make it next year.
I've always heard to never, ever store bananas in the fridge. They're tropical and they'll turn soft and black. That's what I always assumed. Don't they?

Mine never have, but that could be because they get eaten fairly quickly.
I paid $11 for 12 apples. I have been accused of hoarding. : offended: DH wanted to take two to work today and I told him, "No, umm...I mean, just take one so that it wont get... uh... bruised or anything in case you... umm... don't eat it today or something."

Put them on a towel on the counter, not touching. Drape them with a dish towel.

I was going to suggest keeping them in a paper sack, but as Robin said it might work just to cover them with a towel! I love apples! My favourite snack is an apple with almond butter!! :yum:

Honestly, if we get fruit flies I put them up in the bowl cupboard or the pantry. :) A location the flies can't get into thus they go away. ;) I also store excess apples in the bottom of the pantry or in the laundry room. Depends on where I'm storing excess carrots. They can't go together or the carrots will rot really quickly.

I also store apples in the fridge, then take them out about an hour before we eat them. (this causes me to plan ahead!) ..
Putting bananas in the fridge does make them ripe faster. I try to avoid that.

I don't think that's too bad for Honey Crisps. I guess ours weigh about 1/2 pound each, so that would be about a dollar a piece for me. They are worth it!
The ones from MI were not totally sweet -- isn't that odd? They were sweet, but with a tart tanginess to them, too. Still good, though. The fresh-picked IL ones were 100% sweet and bigger, too. I wondered if the MI crop was rushed and picked too soon, for shipping purposes.

Ours have just the tiniest bit of tartness to them. :yum::yum::yum:Just right for me! They smell like caramel apples even without the caramel.
