Do you guys supplement somehow with a chronological history program or do you find that what you learn with FIAR is sufficient paired with a good time line?

A find that FIAR and a timeline is enough at this time.

When my dd reached 1st grade (and we moved to a new state with tougher regs), I checked out for my library What ever 1st Grader Should Know (I think that is the title). For our last quarter, we read one little section a day in the History portion. It made a nice little review of the parts of history we did cover, and supplemented with what we hadn't. My dd did like hearing it all in order. We had not done a timeline, so that may have helped too.

At your dc ages FIAR really is enough...
I found a great book that I really like and we will be doing that along with FIAR this year.

It is called History for Little Pilgrims . There is a mini timeline you make with that program. (The book is inexpensive, has a gentle flow and gets the the main things down in order-but generalizes.) It has vocabulary words to go over-you can do it orally or have older dc write them. Also it has review questions at the end of each chapter. (Again you can do it orally or have older chidlren around k-2 write the answers.)
Later you could go back and say remember when we talked about......

It refers to History as His Story-meaning God's story....
It begins with Adam and Eve in the garden, you make a timeline beginning with the tree-then going to Jesus (the cross) up to modern day..
(You can always add to this timeline later inserting Bible Characters and family members or dates books were published.) The Timeline is pictoral and there is a coloring book you can get to go along with it. For your dc ages I think it would be good. (I got it and plan to use it,)
there is one page in there where they fill in the family tree-or you can help them.

You can see read about it here....

and here from the company that publishes it..

When my children were younger like yours, Katrina, we didn't focus too much on history. But what I did do which was especially helpful for them to place time in order was create a visual timeline of our family.

I strung a piece of string across a room. Then added their photo with a peg in the middle. I then added photos of all our family members and their friends left and right of that. It was great fun. We left it up for a long time and they would often stand and discuss who came where in time.
