I just read the post under Five in a Row with field trip ideas for each book. What a great idea. Does anyone have a list of field trip ideas for the books that are read for Before Five in a Row?
I would love some field trip ideas for my grand daughter and I to go on. I really want her year to be fun learning. Her brother might see all the fun we have and realize he missed out by choosing to go back to school.

I don't have a list, but I sure hope someone does. And I think you're right. Your grandson just might change his mind if you guys are out and about going fun places as part of "school." :)

Remembering back to our B4 days… we:
~Went to a local farm and picked blueberries when rowing Blueberries for Sal.
~Went to the biggest department store in the mall (with teddy bear in tow) to ride the escalator and explore all the areas for Corduroy.
~We went to the zoo to see monkeys, bears, kangaroos for Caps for Sale and various bear titles, and Katy No-Pocket.
~We went sledding for The Snowy Day.
~We didn't ride the bus (wish we had-it would've been a great idea!) but we spent a day doing many errands for The Big Green Pocketbook.
~We went to a park for Play With Me.
~I planned Jenny's Surprise Summer around a beach trip we were going on, dd also spent the night at her grandma's.
~Dd helped plant the carrots for our garden when we did The Carrot Seed, not really a field trip, but we tied it all into the rowing.
~Took a ferry ride for Red Carpet, and also looked through town while out and about for places & things we saw in the book (barber shops, bakeries, monuments, town hall) we did visit a fire station too.
~The farm we visited for blueberries was great for Ask Mr. Bear as well as for the farm animals.
Many times I just tried to talk about the book when we were out and about, because so many of them have real life applications. For instance, if we were out and about I would point out sea gulls we would see flying about and mention Yellow Ball or Jenny's Surprise Summer. In the winter when it got dark early we would say good night to the moon and watch it get larger (or smaller) night after night. If we were walking through the neighbor hood in the summer, I would remind dd about The Quiet Way Home… things like that. The connections were always there, I only needed to point them out.

some great ideas.Thank you. Did you do the readers by the season or the order to do the letter they list to go with it? I printed out from the site the list for the letter to go with the book. I do not know if the books are in that order in the manual. I guess once I receive it I will know more of what it has and the order they have the books in and all.

I didn't do letter of the week with B4FIAR. I used ABC Bible Verses (http://www.amazon.com/My-ABC-Bible-Verses-Hiding/dp/1581340052/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1282923494&sr=8-1) and handwriting to work on letters. So I am no help in combining the two. I tried to schedule the B4 titles according to things that were going on seasonally, when possible).

I don't have a compiled list like I do for the FIAR books- maybe we should compile one!
I do remember a few that we did:
Corduroy- we went and toured an apartment complex. My DD had never been inside an apartment etc... The people were very nice. They took us in the model apartment and all the common areas then the girl read us the story in their party/group room.
We also went to Sears and rode the escalator and looked at the mattresses. Looking at the buttons on them etc...
Blueberries for Sal- We went to the zoo and looked at the bears.
Big Green Pocketbook- we rode the city bus and we went to all the stores like she did and tried to get the same things. We compared their list of "errands" to our normal list of errands.
Caps for Sale- we went to Burlington Coat Factory and tried on all the hats they had for sale.
Katy No Pocket- we went to the hardware store and tried to find the same tools the man had in his apron.
Jenny's Surprise Summer- we were visiting family in California so we went tot he beach.
Little Rabbit- we went tot he pet store and looked at the rabbits there
I will have to think a little harder and check my "what we did" files for some of the others..

Thank you very much. I am anxious to receive my before five in a row manual. I want to see if they show in that manual like in FIAR vol 1 how to put the books read in order to go by season. I printed out the list from homeschool share also for what letter goes with what book. Are the books listed in the order to go by Letter? Or did someone just make a list of what letter to go with what book? I sort of would like to go by season, as you stated you went to the shore when you read, Jenny's Surprise Summer. If that book would end up being read in Winter the shore would be out.
Thank you for the ideas.

The books in the manual are definitely not listed with a letter tie in.
Honestly I wouldn't fret too much about matching them to seasons. Field Trips are certainly fun but they are not necessary. Many people live in a part of the country where they don't grow blueberries so a field trip for that might be just going to the grocery store and buying fresh or frozen blueberries.
Most people don't live by the ocean , so a field trip for Jenny might be going to a lake shore or to a grandparent's house (since the story takes place a a grandparents house) or a playground with a big sand play area. You can make make lots of options work.
That said - here are a couple of lists of suggested plans for order of rowing the books in BFIAR. These lists are all previous posts by ladies here on this board. There is also a letter match up list and several others listed on www.homeschoolshare.com
