View Full Version : Suggestions for restless listeners?

I am having trouble getting my son to hear anything we read or talk about (throughout our school day). The only time he seems to be able to listen, is when he is coloring, but if he finishes in the middle of what we're doing, he's distracted (that fast), and sometimes he's so intent on what color to color that he doesn't hear everything. He's 8, 3rd grade. He also does not like to write.
Should I be doing FIAR instead of Beyond with him, or just keep him loaded with coloring pages. (Legos... he gets caught up in what he's building and doesn't always hear either. Coloring seems the best)
Also, how much time should we spend on a topic with BYFIAR? Say history, with the research and all? I have a 6th grader and 3rd grader that I'm trying to work with and not sure if I'm missing something I could be doing with them or him? I would love most days to go smoothly;)
Thanks for any suggestions you have.

I think if it were me, I would go ahead and do FIAR with him instead of Beyond. If he wants to sit in while you read Beyond with the older, then maybe that would help him develop his listening skills better.

It may be that he is a very visual learner as well. How does he learn best in other subjects? Could you give him specific things to listen for when you're reading? That may help, too.

Agreeing with Cindy about doing FIAR with him. My kids just finished vol 4 in grades 3 and 5. We are moving to Beyond this year in grades 4 and 6.

Agreeing with the ladies here. Try Volume 4 of FIAR. It seems a little "meatier" than Vol. 1-3 (if that's something you're looking for), but the books are just as fun as the 1st 3 volumes. I have a 8 year old 3rd grader and will be re-rowing Vol. 4 with her.

Would anyone know where I can buy FIAR used besides ebay. I just sold vol. 1. I realize you all are right with keeping my son in FIAR. Is my daughter too old (11, in 6th grade) for FIAR? With the FIAR, are there a lot of activities? That seems to be what my son thrives on.
Thanks so much for all of your input.

homeschool classifieds. Vegsource.com are 2 I know of to look for used curriculum.
