Anyone have ideas on keeping my kids (soon to be 5th and 2nd graders) interested in writing through the summer? We school through most of the summer, taking breaks here and there.

One year my dc made a Webkinz newspaper. I think it had two issues.
I'm curious to hear other ideas. We're not doing well with writing here...

letters to grandparents or other relatives
journal of the fun things they do each day
journal between you and them (it goes back and forth)
Have them set up a scavenger hunt for their friends and write all the clues
Could they write and then act out a short play or puppet show
Do a day in the life of x and y with photos and descriptions that they write
Have them make up their own Mad Libs

I just challenged my kids to a blog challenge for the month of July to see who can blog the most. The winner gets $1 for every post they make.
I did make it clear, it can't just be pictures, it has to be writing about something.

Love these!!! Keep them coming!!
We pick an assignment on a Monday and it has to be done by Thursday. Right now we are in to writing scripts and screenplays.

Around here summer writing is really free-writing.
My oldest is really into writing scripts for her and her sisters or her dolls to perform.
And my twins have willingly, on their own initiative, written letters to their pen pals. They even found their own stamps to mail them.
Poetry is also fun for the summer. My girls love to sing and they are notorious for rewriting words to a song. So the more real poetry I can get into them, the better their songs are. :thumb:

DH and I were laughing yesterday about this hilarious caption in the Wall Street Journal. The kids were of course asking "What? What?" so we ended up spending the morning discussing understatement and writing our own captions for magazine images. Very fun!

I think you can click on the image to enlarge it, but in case you can't see it well, it is a pic of men chasing a police officer with a stick and the caption reads "Greek debtors discussing repayment terms."

Jacob loves to write about his favorite products. You can tell we had Qubo for a while during some formative years, because he is now a great infomercial writer!
