Dd and I just did the Betsy Ross lesson on jargon and she was really excited about books that give details writers can use to add realism to their stories.

But, I've looked all kinds of ways and I can only seem to come up with books like that for mystery writers (poisons and such) and style manuals (writing style, not clothes :) )

Does anyone have any better sources or better search terms?

Dd writes a lot about revolutionary war times and regency and lately about WWII and Trixie Belden (post war) era and would love to see some helpful resources.

Here's some online links for writers of historical fiction:

Manuscript Editing (http://www.manuscriptediting.com/histfic.htm)

Cindy Villar's Thistles and Pirates (http://www.cindyvallar.com/HFresources.html) - both online and inprint sources

Elizabeth Crook's fabulous article (http://www.elizabethcrookbooks.com/articles/historical_fiction.htm) for fellow/future historical fiction authors

And a couple of books to check for at your library or Amazon, Borders, wherever:

How to Write and Sell Historical Fiction by Persia Wooley - written specifically for young adults

The Art and Craft of Writing Historical Fiction by James Alexander Thom - One of his historical novels, "Follow the River" was made into a movie, so I think he should know what he's talking about ;)

HTH!

Blessings,
Suz

Edited for links, sorry....

Thanks so much, Suz!

Dd was so excited at the idea that these kinds of things existed and then so disappointed when we couldn't find anything like it in our library or even amazon.com--you'll have made her day!

My dd writes about horses a lot. I got her a HORSE ENCYCLOPEDIA and encourage her to use the jargon that one would hear around a horse stable. (She does not like to but I am trying.)
