Hi Ladies,
I'm just wondering if I really 'need' to add another math program to five in a row for kindergarten? My son doesn't sit for long, and I can't imagine asking him to sit for long enough to do a formal math program. Could we wait another year before starting something like that? I'm new to homeschooling, and don't want him to miss something that he needs to know, but I also don't want to overwhelm him and make him hate learning. (I am planning on adding phonics and think that might be all the sitting still he can handle.)
Thanks!!

Nope. I don't think so...the applied math in FIAR is a lot of counting among other things.

I think you could do a lot of hands on applied math type stuff with him like identifying shapes, one to one correspondence (if he's not already a counter), patterns, size relationships that sort of thing.

Agreeing with Heather W. I have friends that delay formal math programs until 6th grade to ensure that their kids know their math facts.

Another "no" vote here. I didn't add a formal math program with my 3rd child until she was in 3rd grade and she is doing wonderfully.

I had a similar question not long ago and one of the moms here recommended Ruth Beechick's The Three R's. It has given me the confidence that I'm on the right path with using B4 and lots of counting with him.

ALL we used for K was FIAR. Nothing else. We started a formal math program in 1st.
