any speech therapists out here, or moms with kids that have this problem?

my 3yo was tested recently at the school for speech problems. He scored well above where he needs to be as far as understanding language

the problem comes in with specific sounds in the beginning of words. For example, he will replace the beginning "K" sound with a "d". So for Cat- he will say "dat". Yet in the word basket he pronounces the "K" fine. The ST thought it was very unusual. And while he is extremely difficult to understand due to misprounouncing the beginning of words- he didn't qualify for speech, due to having the sounds in the middle or end of words. I'm frustrated that they look at a chart to determine needs, and not that the child is having a hard time communicating !!

just wondering if this is something that will resolve itself without help, or do I need to seek out private speech services, since the school won't provide it?

My 4 y.o. does this with "S" and "L." He knows his letter sounds, just doesn't like the effort it takes to make those two sound when speaking. It took us awhile on vacation to figure out what a "peed" boat was. LOL!

I find it interesting that the ST thought it was unusual. Almost every child I know did that at that same age; I have one who is just now phasing out of it...

You might try an evaluation with a private ST and see what they say if you can afford it. If not, Small Talk (FIAR) and Straight Talk (NATHHAN) are both very good tools for working on ST at home.

For the longest time my 6 year old dd would take the "s" off of words that began with an s blend (sp, sl, etc) and put it on the end. Spoon became "poons," snot became "nots," etc. She did this from 2 to around 4 years old.
