and I need to know more about autism, epecially Asperger syndrome.

Ds appointment was at 9:00 AM and we didn't get out till almost noon. I guess that is normal time for a first consult. Ds seen one doctor and an educational consultant and another lady, but she was basically a nurse.

My mom went with me so as to let the doc know of anything that I might forget or to just confirm some things. The nurse gave ds some K'Nex blocks while she talked with my mom and myself. The doctor came in and she asked ds to color/draw while she talked with us, then she decided that he should go out in the waiting room to wait for us (his sister was out there, so that was fine). The doctor continued to ask loads of questions, even after I had filled out the very long questionaire.

So after the doctor finished with her questions, actually we didn't finish, just ran out of time and she needed to do ds exam; so she, my mom and ds went to the exam room for that. As they were doing that, an Educational Coordinator came in to talk with me. She had already been out to talk to ds (with dd present) and wanted to talk with me about what they discussed and about the homeschooling and she was hoping to see some samples of ds school stuff (I didn't think to take anything b/c I wasn't sure what they would want) and then she was telling me how ds interacted with her, not keeping eye contact, not answering some questions 'fully', not keeping on task and then she said that ds just kinda through her WAY out of the loop and started talking about his neice and sil (the EC wasn't exactly sure what/who he was talking about until dd tuned her in) and then she talked to dd a bit about why I homeschooled her.

Well while the EC was talking to me she said this: 'Doctor ____ didn't exacty say anything but I am going out and asking anyway because this is what I am seeing/hearing.' She then asked if I had ever heard of Asperger Syndrome? She wanted to know what I may know about it and what I don't know and that she thinks (they are going to be doing a lot of testing over the next 4 - 5 weeks) that ds may have this. I told her that I knew that it is 'part' of the Autism thing and that another Neuro doc said that he thought that ds may have high functioning autism. This doc told me this about a year ago. The EC went on to tell me that ds is about 2 years behind and that she doesn't think that being in 2nd grade is a good thing.

Sorry so long with this, but I realy want you to know as much as possible before you may answer. So if you have a little one with Asperger or other Autism, please let me know what to expect, what questions to ask, what to expect from future office visits.

Our next appointment with be: 2 for testing, 11/11 and 11/13, then on 11/16 ds will go for OT DE VE Evaluation, then on 11/25 will be ST ADOS testing, then dh and I will go back on 12/16 for an information meeting with the doctor.

Thanks for any info you can give. Feel free to send my a PM also.

My 11dd has Asperger Syndrome. It is different for each person and gender.
I will save my response or add to the discussion after a mom with an Aspie son chimes in.

I can offer book recommendations if you would like.

The day my dd received her diagnosis was the best day in her life as well as the family's. Because we had a name for what she was going through. She always felt different from peers. In our family we say "knowledge is power".

 Hi Robyn, my daughter has Asperger Syndrome. It is different for each child and especially boys from girls. So if you need to PM me please feel free to. It sounds like you are on the right track. The testing for me was the worst part. It was long and taxing on my daughter, but worth it to get help. It will help you know how to help your son. I am a bit surprised they left your daughter in the room while they talked to your son? Or did I misread that? As far as books anything by Tony Attwood is your best bet. He is awesome!!

PM me if you need to!!:group:

Thanks

My dd was out in the waiting room and the doctor took ds out there with her (she's 19, so she is responsible) and that is where the EC went to talk to him. My dd said that the lady was really nice and she spoke with both of them in kind ways.
