View Full Version : Dyslexia?

My sister called tonight which is rare for her to do on a night she worked. Her first words our of her mouth when I answer was that she needed to vent to whoever will listen to her. Immediately I knew the reason for the call and was thinking what did the school do now?

I'll try to make this short and not vent (like the reading teacher telling my nephew he would never learn  ) too much. My sister requested her 4th grade ds be tested for dyslexia. I didn't realize it was hereditary but we have a cousin that was diagnosed with it and my nephew has struggled so much with reading.

Anyways she found out the elementary school (he's now in the intermediate school) had tested him 2 years ago and he is dyslexic! No one said anything to her! I guess whatever he was labeled as implied he was dyslexic but no one told her or her dh.

My sister is mad and so am I. She has been working with him so much to help him with his reading all this time there was a reason and they school was not trying to help him succeed. The reading teacher is the one that told him he would never learn. I'm so proud of my nephew! He has worked so hard.

That is a little background. My sister wants to continue to work with him to help him read. He loves to read. Is there any suggestions I can pass on to her? With the amount of time she spends working with her kids every night, she should just homeschool. She actually mentioned it a few weeks ago. She had 3 children go through the elementary school and has nothing but trouble. Her youngest will move up next year.

Okay....I've got that out of the way. My oldest ds is dyslexic and he reads on grade level and maybe a little above. He struggles, too, and it effects every part of his schooling.

I would encourage her to read as much about dyslexia as she can to educate herself.

Some resources I have found to work well with my ds are the resources from AVKO www.avko.org/

Dianne Craft's Right Brain Phonics - www.diannecraft.com/

I've also heard great things about the Davis Program for Dyslexics, but I have not done it personally.

How upsetting! No help for the dyslexia, but he needs an IEP. Start here....contact them for help if she needs more than the site offers:

Thank you for the suggestions and understanding.

He does have an IEP. The things she keeps telling me just make me so mad. He went to Huntington for a while and they had him up to 3rd grade reading level. He is now at a 2nd grade. Huntington didn't even know he was dyslexic because everything was based on what my sister and bil told them. I'm wondering why they didn't test. I'm pretty sure they did an assessment and man do they charge a lot!

The people at Huntington were great and even came in for one of the IEP meetings last year. My sister left in tears and the lady from Huntington said she does these all the time and has never had an experience like that!

This is also the school district that was telling a lot of kids that have ADHD and sending them to the doctor for meds. My sister told me today that the doctors in the area are now refusing when they realize which district. :sad They said the same thing about my niece and nephew and both were on the meds. My sister finally stopped when my nephew was not acting himself at all. It was actually scary. My niece just stopped and never told her mom. She was excelling in school without it!

I've got experience with the Davis stuff that Esther mentioned and think it is a great program. It can be pricey, but it has worked for 2 kids in our church and our Selena. I am also planning to use it with my son Einar if I can ever get my poop in a group!

Our Davis lady is available for consult and continuing questions and fine tuning after the initial therapy. It is NOT hard to do at home. And I'd say it's fully worth the price.

I wouldn't think that consulting an attorney would be out of hand. Many schools honestly do the best they can (and they're STILL failing) while other schools do what is best for THEM from the outset. Your sister has to be a VERY VERY VERY squeaky wheel - like several times a week - to get things done for her kids. Perhaps she ought to point out how much $$ her three kids earn the district and how they may suddenly find themselves WITHOUT that money. Special needs kids get even more from state/fed programs for their districts.

Thank you for posting, Carrie!! We are thinking of doing Davis with Meg (had our initial eval last week) but have not known anyone who went through it.

Sorry about your nephew, Heidi. That reading teacher's comment makes me so steamed!!
