Just thought I'd share......

Our library didn't have (and couldn't locate in a timely manner) Too Many Tamales for the chapter 3 lesson in Homer. So, I got to thinking about what we could use as a substitute for TMT. And then yesterday it hit me in a HUGE duh!!*slap*back*of*head moment - The Duchess Bakes a Cake!!

Now, we did the lesson this morning, and dd was delighted to be revisted by an old friend. The story fit nicely into Jane's lesson, if not perfectly. And we did a Venn diagram, which added another dimension to the learning!

HTH someone else!

Heather,

It was nice to get reacquainted with the Duchess and her cast of characters again!

I found the similarities between the two stories to be "enough" to teach the lesson on thematic stories, even though Duchess doesn't quite follow as closely as TMT sounds like it does. There's the problem with a food item, the fact that a child finds the solution, and that they are both humorous, "over-the-top" type stories. And Duchess, like TMT, shows a different time and culture. So, as I said, while it wasn't a perfect fit for Jane's lesson, it was a usable, effective substitute for TMT. Not ever having read TMT, I wasn't sure it would work, but it did!

Blessings!
