It seems that I am living on smoothies this pg. so I thought I would branch out and ask others what their favorite recipes are? So far we have done the frozen berry ones, a mixed frozen fruit one (with the frozen mixed fruit bag you get at Sam's) and today dh tested out a choc. peanut butter one...which I think needed bananas with it. I am trying to do a diabetic diet to ward off GD this go around so if it's possible to include a carb count, that would be great...otherwise I can make a pretty good guess. (I am using a low carb yogurt to make them so I am still within my range)

We are making them everyday now! I'm game to try any good combinations! Thanks!

I don't know carb counts- We like frozen mixed berries, sometimes just plain strawberry or blueberry, another smoothie flavor we like is crushed pineapple and coconut along with the yogurt. Sometimes I throw a banana in as well. OOH! And Peaches make delicious smoothies- my favorite!

This is what we do:

Freeze your bananas in pieces (like 3 pieces per banana) to always have on hand
Frozen fruit (we like mixed berries)
Orange juice
Plain, non-fat yogurt

Blend and enjoy!:)

The smoothie that I have almost everyday:

about 1 cup of frozen fruits (strawberries, pineapples, blueberries, peaches, etc.)
1 cup of orange or apple juice
dollop of silken tofu
handful of grapes
1/2 banana
about 1 tbs. wheat germ
about 1 tbs. ground flax seeds
ice

Once I got my Vitamix I started adding 1 small apple, 1 handful of fresh spinach, and 1/2 carrot to this.

Other ideas:

Banana Honey Smoothie

8 ounces of Vanilla Yogurt or Very Vanilla Soy Milk
6 to 8 1" chunks of frozen banana (ADD A FEW MORE IF THICKENING NEEDED)
Squirt of honey

Blueberry Delight

1 pint fresh blueberries or 2 cups (10 oz.) frozen blueberries -- slightly thawed
1 slice of fresh pineapple or 6 ounces of Dole 100% Pineapple Juice - not from concentrate
1 medium orange (remove outer zest only leaving as much of the white pith as possible)
1 container (8 oz.) lowfat vanilla yogurt
Squirt of honey
2 to 3 cups of ice (pending on if you are using fresh or frozen blueblueberries)

Chocolate Banana

1 banana
1 tablespoon chocolate syrup
1 cup milk
1 cup crushed ice

California Smoothie (I haven't tried this one yet but it sounds :yum: )

7 large strawberries
1 (8 ounce) container lemon yogurt
1/3 cup orange juice

Thanks Libbie! I just made the California smoothie and it is wonderful! My son loves banana yogurt and I accidently purchased lemon yogurt and I was wondering what I was going to do with it! I would have not thought to put it in my smoothie. I recently purchased a Vita Mix so I am just learning!

I recently purchased a Vita Mix so I am just learning!

There's a site: vitamixrecipes.com They sell recipes for .99 each or you can get unlimited access for $25. With the code "Vitanow" you can get $5 off membership.

Some of the recipes will work with a regular blender, but many of them really do require a Vitamix to get the right consistency.

Thanks Libbie. Do you belong to that website? I did see it and wondered if it was worth it or not. I did go to the reg. Vita Mix webstie and look at recipes there. It is free.

Here are our 2 "usuals" around here:

1 banana
1 handful mixed berries
plain yogurt
milk
ice
(if I have it I will add a handful of fresh spinach, you can't even taste it!) :)

OR

1 banana
1 handful frozen mangoes
1 handful frozen peaches
plain yogurt
orange juice
ice

Thanks so much everyone! These all sound so good, I can't wait to try them. Now the question is, what order do I try them in?!

Libbie, if you don't mind me asking, how did you decide to buy a Vitamixer? I have seen them demonstrated at Costco but didn't know if I would really need it? Thanks for the great recipes! How did you get into the smoothie every day habit? I must admit, I think I love smoothies as much as icecream and could even give up icecream for them!

Lisa- I'm glad you posted! I have greatly reduced my Internet time during Lent but did think that asking for help with smoothies would be ok! How are ya feeling? How is the pg going?

Candace, Is the spinach the same kind that you buy in the salad section at the grocery store? Can you REALLY not taste it because I would throw that in my smoothies in a heartbeat if I could sneak it past dh and the kids!

Andrea, Peaches do sound delightful!

and Mary, I hadn't thought to add orange juice...that would change the flavor a bit wouldn't it? But I might not do it often as it does raise the carb count for me. (I can only have 15 g carb each snack!)

I'm sure you guys are way ahead of me on this one, but we have been having some left over lately so I just poured the rest into popsicle forms and froze them and most of my kids love them and they must be so much healthier for them than regular popsicles! (some of my kids don't like the smoothies for some reason?)

Hollee, hi again! One of my daughter's really likes the berry one, with milk. The other daughter and I LOVE the orange juice one w/ mangoes...just a more citrus-y taste.

On the spinach - yes, just buy the salad, and really any type of dark green is going to be good for you. But don't get anything too thick and crunchy or it won't blend well. We have had 2 blenders, 1 blended the spinach better than the other, but here's what I did. The first few times just add a tiny bit, adding a little more each time. I promise you, I'm the pickiest eater alive, I don't eat ANY vegetables willingly (I know, awful) but I put them in my smoothie and that is how I get my veggies. (I will eat a salad every now and then...)

Anyway, hope that helps! And, you can always try it and see how it goes. Generally the berries and yogurt take over the taste of anything you'll put in there. Some people put in protein powders, flax seed, oh you name it...throw it in the blender!

I've been wanting one for about 15 years but never felt that I could justify the cost. I was all set to buy one as a 40th birthday present to myself when lo and behold my dh surprised me with one.

I really like that I can drink whole fruits and veggies and not just the juice. As for the daily habit, I keep the Vitamix out on the counter and I wash my fruits and vegetables as soon as I bring them home. I also keep a stash of frozen fruit in the freezer. That way I just pull out what I want, throw it into the container, blend, and enjoy. I feel so much better since I've been having a daily fruit and veggie smoothie- I like to eat healthy foods but I'm usually behind re: fresh vegetables.

You really can't taste the spinach in the smoothie- as long as it's well blended. My dh and dd had one with fruit + carrots, celery, and spinach and they enjoyed it- of course I didn't tell them what was in it.;)

I used to make smoothies all the time during our swimming days. I also used to drink one every morning for breakfast (back in the day :eyes: ) when I did step aerobics (and I was 10 lbs. lighter!).

Ya'll have inspired me to get out my blender and start mixing! Thanks for the great recipes!

We make smoothies quite often. We use one small container of yogurt, then that same container full of milk, 3 or 4 ice cubes and your favorite fresh or frozen fruit. We just dump it all in the blender as we pull out of the fridge, blend and enjoy. My boys 10 and 12 make these constantly for breakfast or snacks for themselves, their sisters and especially when their friends are over. Quick, easy, healthy.

Dh makes smoothies every morning, and I make them about once a week for the girls and me. We do use the blender and at times I even feel like I need a 2nd one. I have used it during this season of canning, to make dessert milkshakes, etc. I guess I don't need another blender, but a second jar for the unit I have....

We make our smoothies with plain or fruit flavored yogurt and lots of fruit, I sometimes add flaxseed or flaxseed flour, avocado and tomato to up the nutrients ;) . Dh puts nuts, eggs and other things into his (which is why I need a second jar, I am severely allergic to nuts).

Are you asking about smoothies or blenders?

I have a neat thing. It is from cuisainart(sp). It's a small food processer but the base also fits the full size blender. So, 1 base and 2 appliances. You buy them together. I use the blender to make applesauce and smoothies.

Smoothie

frozen strawberries
frozen banana
handful wheat germ
whole milk

Place all in blender and use ice chop setting (on above unit;) ). You will have to play with how much frozen stuff vs. how much milk to make it blend smooth, but not runny.

Our kids enjoy making their own smoothies with the Magic Bullet. These don't take up much room at all and are fairly inexpensive. The kids usually choose from a variety of frozen fruits, bananas, juice and vanilla yogurt. We've also made our own McFlurry's/Blizzards! :yum:

My dh & I love Choc banana smoothies (which I heard about on these boards........where else! )

1 whole ripe banana diced
1 cup milk (we use low fat/skim milk)
3-4 tablespoons yoghurt (we use a low fat honey & banana flovoured one)
big squirt of good honey
1 tablespoon of either chocolate sauce/syrup or chocolate powder like Milo (do you have Milo over there?)

Blend together. Very filling and very delicious! :yum:

My dd doesn't like milk, so she has Mango smoothies

1 fresh mango (or canned mango if you can't get fresh. Either is good)
1 cup mango juice (or a good fruit juice of your choice)
1 cup ice
(for dh I would now add ice-cream, but dd doesn't like ice-cream either! Crazy kid  )

Yummo! :thumb:

We make smoothies occasionally. Otherwise we use the blender to make milk shakes, protein shakes, puree home made cream soups (tomato, split pea, butternut bisque, etc). I have also used it to mix a large batch of eggs for quiche or an oven pancake.

I keep the blender in a cabinet because I like a clear counter. It gets used more often than the popcorn popper or the waffle maker, and we still keep both of those.

We use our blender several times a week for smoothies. I like to have a Spirutein smoothie for breakfast. I get the Natural Vanilla, sugar free Spirutein. Lately, I mix it with a small banana, a handfull of frozen blueberries, a little bit of white grape or apple juice, and milk.

i have a magic bullet & like it EXCEPT the cups have these sharp ridges INSIDE the cup & it makes them hard to clean well. however, ours has a "juicer" pitcher that i recently learned goes w/ it! I thought it was just some piece of misc junk! If that works well, then i'll be tossing my blender since it doesn't do well w/ smoothies/shakes.

We make smoothies a lot. And I use the blender a lot.

I make a milk-based iced coffee drink in the mornings, and use the blender for that. Also, for milk shakes, for mixing up my snow cone syrup.

When we are making ham salad, I will often grind the ham up in the blender instead of getting out the grinder or food processor.

It is good for mixing up ranch dressing and other salad dressings. It's easy to clean, btw...

Also, I make "tiger milk" in the summer - I fill the blender with ice, and then pour milk over the top, add in a little vanilla, sugar and nutmeg, and blend. It is refreshing and gets some good milk into the dc.

ETA: What is this magic bullet thing?

I recently killed my KitchenAid blender making smoothies with ice. Fortunately my dad had one they weren't using and gave it to me. I now have one base and 2 pitchers.:D Anyway, I'm a bit more careful with the ice now, and leave it out to soften up a bit before making the smoothies. I haven't had any more issues since I started doing that.
Just thougth I'd toss out that caution.
I guess we do the same as most here:
fruit, usually bananas & strawberries, or a frozen blend (defrosted a bit, too)
yogurt or kefir
my husband likes to add an egg to his
milk and honey or maple syrup
softened ice

simple and delicious.
Enjoy!

Victoria,

I just buy lots of fruit, whatever is on sale, and put it in my blender. Then, I freeze it in ice cube trays.

When I want to use it, I put some fruit cubes in the blender, add some blueberry or white grape juice, and there you have it.

I use peaches, grapes, pears, some apple, lots and lots of melon, occasional banana, plums......

The only smoothies we do around here are green smoothies. None of us liked smoothies at all until we discovered them.

Our basic recipe is to use 3-4 fruits (whatever you've got on hand, I keep an assortment in the freezer, including bananas which we peel & stick in the freezer when they start getting good and brown, works great :thumb: ), some sweet potato (raw, peeled and cubed) and a handful of spinach or kale. I've found that freezing the spinach/kale helps it blend more smoothly. Add some rice milk and V8 light fusion and blend well (maybe 4 oz each? I just eyeball it). This will make about 3 8oz servings.

Once you get past the shock of the color, it's really, really :yum:. The kids, of course, love that part. Go figure.

ETA: Forgot to say that if it's not sweet enough for your taste, you can always add some honey or agave necter. The juice helps with that as well.

I know, I was the same way. Over and over folks would tell me that you couldn't taste the greens. I just couldn't believe it until I tried it myself. It's true, you can't taste it at all (unless you don't quite blend it well enough). The kids LOVE the green color, they think that's just so cool. :eyes:

I'm another one that is in favor of the green smoothies. They will never know the spinach is in there besides the color. Really.

We have been enjoying mangoes with a touch of vanilla yogurt, as much spinach as I can get in there, ice and agave nectar or honey...whichever I'm in the mood for. Everyone loves this and not everyone in the family even likes mango.

We also do strawberries or peaches - if you use frozen, the ice is obviously not necessary - spinach, yogurt or kefir and agave.

Victoria,

If they puke you can hold me personally accountable. ;) But I'm not coming over to clean up the mess. :D

If they're like most kids, they'll love the fact that they're green...something about that gets them squeeling and laughing. Though they may start with their nose turned up, they just have to give it a try. I'll look forward to hearing their review. :)

I only make 1 kind, and it took a year for my kids to decide they liked it.

1 frozen banana
about 6 frozen strawberries
1-2 T wheat germ
enough cold milk to make it blend well

This will make about 2 full glasses.

That's it. I blend it together until smooth. I originally tried some honey but I didn't like it. It is plenty sweet with just the strawberries.

1 c. frozen berries

I know I'm late in coming to this (I'm sorry I missed it), but I just wanted to add that we put in a handful of Shredded Wheat on top of our smoothies....let it set for a couple minutes before eating (that way the wheat is softened a bit) and then eat it....it's a nice crunchy way to enjoy your smoothie. We use granola too, but there's a lot of sugar in a lot of granola mixes, the shredded wheat holds up really well.

I'm always on the lookout for good smoothie recipes, so I love this thread :D. My "food-elitisit"/snobbish dh and dc will never have a green smoothie. I occasionally make vegetable/fruit juices in our juicer, but that's only for dh and I. The dc refuse to go near that. Here are some smoothies that I make from time to time for breakfast and keep in the fridge for snacks later in the day.

STRAWBERRY RASPBERRY
1 1/2 cups OJ
1 banana
1 cup frozen raspberries
1 cup frozen strawberries

CHERRY VANILLA ... dh LOVES this one
1 cup vanilla frozen yogurt
1 cup apple juice
2 cups frozen cherries

BERRY CRANBERRY
1 1/2 cups cranberry juice
1/2 cup frozen banana slices
1 1/2 cups mixed frozen berries

ORANGE RASPBERRY
1 cup OJ
1 cup frozen raspberries
1 cup vanilla frozen yogurt

1/2 cup vanilla yogurt
1 banana
1 1/2 cups frozen strawberries

Well if you want them healthy I use the yogurt and fruit and orange juice like the others do but if you want a dessert smoothie this is what we have.

We use the daquiri mix in the frozen section of your grocery store. Use the can to measure your other ingredients and add 2 cans of 7-up and 2 cans of ice. We really like these but they are a special dessert around here not a breakfast substitute.

Here's another "health" question from me :perplex: I'm TRYING (well, am going to try) to do better with breakfast. We eat waaaaaaaayyyyyyy too much boxed cereal. I've finally bought the ingredients for all the recipes ya'll recommended on my homemade cereal thread from months ago (I went to the commissary yesterday and stocked up).

I've heard several of you talk about smoothies. So, what do you do? Do you serve this to everyone in your family for breakfast? Do you serve it with anything else? What are green smoothies? (Haven't I read about that here?)

Any recipes for me? Thanks!

We just had smoothies this morning . . . made with organic plain yogurt, fruit (this morning was frozen pineapple and mango and fresh banana), milk, and a bit of agave nectar -- if I use a flavored yogurt, I don't add any sweetener.

I usually serve them with a muffin or quick bread. I've done green smoothies a few times, but I don't always have the "green" part on hand. I posted about our green smoothies here (http://godseekersacademy.blogspot.com/2009/03/st-patricks-day-fun.html) -- and in there I think I linked to where I got the recipe (I believe it was Linda's blog). HTH!

I puree my spinach with cranberry juice, add plain yogurt, a banana, and some frozen fruit. Sometimes we sweeten it with a little bit of honey too. We call them shrek shakes and even my little one will eat them.

Candace C

Paige, our "basic" smoothie is banana, organic strawberry yogurt, frozen berries and either OJ or milk.

Sometimes we just use frozen strawberries...sometimes we use mixed berries...or rasberries, etc. Any kind of frozen fruit really, I just get a few bags of frozen fruit from the grocery store each week.

You can try it with the milk OR orange juice...they both have their own flavor, we like both. :)

I have added spinach to ours before...but we don't do it regularly anymore. I do'nt always have it on hand either.

Had smoothies this morning!

What I like to do is freeze bananas when they get to the stage of "no one is going to eat these!" These are always on hand. In addition, I keep frozen fruit in the bag (or you could freeze your own fresh) of blueberries, mixed fruit, strawberries...whatever you like.

Now, what I do is blend orange juice (or any), plain non-fat yogurt, and the fruit.

It's breakfast for me and most of the time dd. Ds like to have additional foods most times. After all, he usually has three breakfasts.:)

They make a great snack mid-morning, too, while doing school. Anytime, really, of the day.:)

Our basic smoothies are similar to what's mentioned above...yogurt, some kind of fruit (blueberries, strawberries, bananas, mango) and a little OJ. If it's plain yogurt I'll add a little honey, if I'm using vanilla yogurt I don't.

Another thing I like to do is basically make the same recipe but on the thinner side and then freeze it in a popsicle mold. Then I let them have popsicles for breakfast and they think I'm the greatest Mom ever. :)

Super Dumb Question:
So you just blend up some yogurt & fruit?

I've kinda ignored the smoothie craze and never gave it much thought.

We eat a lot of yogurt anyway..at least one yogurt a day per child.

Is there anything else you can use besides yogurt? I think we eat too much yogurt.

Kendra AU
05-08-2009, 08:01 AM
Yup, Alice, you blend whatever you've got..

I blend

Homemade yogurt
Stevia (or honey)
Frozen fruit (fresh works too, frozen gives you a thicker milkshake type smoothie)
Milk (sometimes juice if I don't have milk on hand.. Juice also sweetens and gives you a bit of a slushie type effect vs a milkshake type effect)

You whirl them away until smooth.. I save the leftovers and pour them in popsicle molds for the kids. :D

Some combos we like are:

Strawberries
yogurt
orange juice
stevia

Peaches
Strawberries
juice/water
stevia
spinach

Strawberries
yogurt
stevia

I rarely measure.. I just put it in and walla.. I liked using my Rocket blender for this, but the motor burned out. so now I make it in the food processor cause my regular blender broke too. :eyes:

Oh, and for extra "punch" you can add a bit of protein powder. Soy will have a bit of taste, whey protein powder won't.

Our favorite smoothie is:

Cran-water - I always have this on hand in the fridge - I put a 1/4 cup 100% cranberry juice from the natural foods store in a quart jar and then fill it the rest of the way with water. I start with about a cup of the cran-water and then use more if I want to thin the smoothie down a bit.
frozen berries
banana
whey or brown rice protein

Is there anything else you can use besides yogurt? I think we eat too much yogurt.

Just for the sake of it... you're eating the right amount of yogurt according to my doctor, if you are getting at least one / day. It is a huge boost to the immune system, AND is helpful for allergies, so don't slack off! ;)

You don't HAVE to add yogurt, but it is helpful to have that bit of protein included. However, for summer afternoon smoothies, I've been known to use frozen fruit, a little juice, and some ice.
