We used Horizons K for my son this past year. He did very well but dh wants me to switch to Saxon for this coming year. I know some use this a year ahead. Has anyone had experience with Saxon and Horizons to know if I need to do Saxon 1 or 2? I'm not at all for rushing him, but I don't want him to be bored either.

Thanks!

I've had no experience (first hand) with Horizon, but.. here's a quick run down on Saxon.. If I had known what Saxon K had, we would indeed have skipped it. There was mostly patterning, shapes, days of week, etc. Things that my little one knew from normal day to day "stuff".

Saxon 1 will start out with some of this (first 20 lessons or so) then it will progress to teaching basic addition with some some more and some some went away type stories. They will teach basic counting and eventually teach them to count by 10's, 5's, 2's and Odd numbers to 19. They will learn BASIC addition and subtraction. They will learn days of week (again) and weekends vs week days. They will learn to count money (pennies, nickles, dimes) they will get a small glimpse into fractions (half, whole, and possibly quarters and thirds..) You'll also work on telling time on the hour and half hour.

You CAN view the table of contents for all the lessons (135 or something like that) to compare it with your previous math book. I think you can do that at cbd.com Book 2 starts out with the same stuff from book 1 for the first 25 lessons or so, but then it's slow at how quickly it progresses them forward.

Oh wow, Kendra. Thank you! Horizons does all that and more in K. It ends with adding double digits. And my son has done quite well with it. The only reason dh wants him switched is because he wants him to use Saxon beginning with 54 and he feels it might be hard to switch later, even though that's what our oldest did. Their younger grades were not available way back then.

Off to order Saxon 2.

Thanks again!!
