I'm looking for a list of sounds we encounter. I see that there are "about" 40 phonemes and that is fine.

However, I'm wanting a list of how various letter combinations make that sound. For instance, the /sh/ is made with "sh", but is also made by "sia" as in "Russia"

Maybe it's a list of spelling rules?

I'd like to make a match game for the kids for them to practice these types of things. I hope I'm making sense. I"m not tracking so well. So ask for clarification if you need it.

Thanks!

You might try googling phonogram instead of phoneme. That would tie you into the whole Spalding method scene, and I'm pretty sure I found lists of phonograms when I was checking that out.

There are 70 phonograms, which includes the 26 letters of the alphabet, and they make the 44 distinct sounds in our language. 29 rules govern the use of these phonograms and with these 70 phonograms and 29 rules you can phonetically spell 98% of English words.

In the word Russia, you have the sounds /r/ /u/ /s/ /sh/ /a/. The /sh/ sound is made by "si". "Si" can also say /zh/ as in "vision"

The ABC's and All Their Tricks by Margeret Bishop (http://www.amazon.com/ABCs-All-Their-Tricks/dp/0880621494) is a good annotation of the sounds and their rules if you aren't wanting a curriculum. ;)

Here is a list of phonograms (http://www.all-about-spelling.com/phonograms.html)

And here are the rules (http://www.lewrockwell.com/taylor/taylor79.html)

you could also purchase spelling rule cards and phonogram cards from here (http://www.swrtraining.com/id51.html) to play games...actually...they even have some premade games of that stuff on this (http://www.swrtraining.com/id51.html) website.
