Dd has been devouring Nancy Drew books this summer and she happened upon the use of the word "fitted" a few times. We both were  about the use so we looked it up in the dictionary. Is the past tense of fit "fitted"? I wondered if it was a modernization of our language. Her book says, "After trying several of the keys, she at last found one which fitted the lock." If I was writing this, I would have used the word fit...

Just curious! :)

"Fitted" is a more antiquated past tense of "fit".

It's also still typically used by those speaking British English. It is correct, just rarely used in American English :)
