Since reading the thread about Progressive Phonics being free now, I have spent some time looking at their website. I am a bit confused though...is this a complete phonics program? For those of you who have used it, can you tell me, step-by-step, how you used it?

My ds just turned 5, so I know we have plenty of time. I have purchased Explode the Code (we are still working through the primers) and Happy Phonics. We also use HWOT for handwriting.

Since we have started on ETC and Happy Phonics, I am kind of kicking myself for not purchasing a curriculum that tells me exactly what to do. While I really like ETC and Happy Phonics (so does ds), I really think that since my ds is my oldest, and this is my first time teaching anyone to read, having a program that tells me exactly what to do and when to do it would be helpful.

I would appreciate info about Progressive Phonics or any suggestions that you may have. Thanks! :)

I only used it after my kiddos knew their letter sounds so I'm not familiar with the first part of the program. I also didn't use it all the way through for either of my dc.

That said, it has short sections of what you say, such as and I'm definitely paraphrasing here, for the silent e sound, "The 'e' at the end of a word is sneaky and reaches around to pinch the vowel making the vowel shout it's name." For example, like. "The 'e' stays silent because it doesn't want anyone to know it did the pinching." Both of my kids loved the silent e.

The stories are in different colors so you read the text with your child alternating depending on the color of the word. There's plenty of review too as the program doesn't move too quickly.

Both of my kids enjoyed the humor. I liked that the handwriting is tracing and offers practice of the words.

I hope this helps with your decision. :)
