I want to make my own and I wanted to hear some yummy recipes! We want to add it to our homemade raw yogurt as a new item for breakfast. Oh, and I would like one with using honey or maple syrup in it instead of sugar. I am still open to brown sugar or sugar ones, but trying to stay kind of way from that ingredient.
Thanks for sharing!

By far the best one I've ever had is from Alton Brown on Good Eats! He totally rocks in case you do not know this.
Hit the Food Network Web site and search for Good Eats and then do a search on granola.
Fabulous stuff! I don't have the time to fish the link for you, but if when I come back you haven't found it I will post it.
Too good to pass up believe me!

42 oz, oatmeal or equivalent
2 cups brown sugar
2 cups coconut
2 cups whole wheat flour
2 cups wheat germ
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 1/2 cups cold water
1/2 cups oil
2 T vanilla
1 T. salt
2 cups chopped nuts (I usually use almonds)
Mix all dry ingredients, bean oil, water and vanilla together. pour over dry ingredients and stir thoroughly distributed. Spread on 2 cookies sheets and bake at 300 degrees for 20 minutes. Stir and switch shelves. Bake, stir and switch for one hour. May add raisins or dry fruit for the last 15 minutes or when you remove from the oven. Cool and store in an airtight container.
This recipe came from my mother in law and we like it because it makes bigger chunks, than just rolled oats. I think I sometimes bake it a little longer, it might still be soft when you take it out, but should harden up when it cools, I let it get light brown.
It's kind of trial and error.

I've been wanting to ask this question, but with my newly diagnosed food allergies, I just gave up! If you can believe this, I am allergic to oats and rice as well as nut.... is there any granola hope?

is there any granola hope?
My guess would be that you'd have to come up with some other rolled grain.... some of the grain gurus around here might have some ideas... You might want to look at getting a flaker mill, or some sort of grain mill that has a flaker attachment.

My favorite homemade granola recipe: (from Make-a-mix Cookery)
10 cups rolled oats
1 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup shredded coconut
2 cups raw sunflower seeds
1 cup sesame seeds
3 cups chopped nuts (almonds, pecans, walnuts in any combination)
Syrup
1-1/2 cup brown sugar
1-1/2 cups water
1-1/2 cups vegetable oil
1/2 cup honey
1/2 cup molasses
1/2 Tbsp. salt
2 tsps. cinnamon
1 Tbsp. vanilla
Raisins and/or other dried fruit as desired
Preheat oven to 300. In a large bowl, combine the dry ingredients. Mix well. In a large saucepan, combine the ingredients for the syrup, and heat until sugar is dissoved, but DO NOT BOIL. Pour over dry ingredients and stir until well-coated. Spread in thin layers on large cookie sheets with sides (takes about 4 9"x13" pans). Bake 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Bake 15 minutes longer for crunchier texture. Cool. Add raisins or other dried fruit if desired. Store in airtight containers for up to six months.

I can't help it if Alton Brown is the most amazing man on the planet!! I mean, any man that can explain the scientific process needed to make the lightest sweetest meringue in my less-than-equiped kitchen, and make me laugh, too??? I mean, c'mon!!! He's the bomb!
And I can vouch for Dawn's granola, too. :yum:

Amen to that! Alton is the bomb! We watch him every night and my five year old loves all of the science!
Here is my all time favorite by far (although I will now have to try the Alton Brown recipe!):)
This recipe came from Family Fun magazine and I have given it as a Christmas gift several times and it has gotten rave reviews.
Crunch Homemade Granola
1/4 cups rolled oats
1 cup wheat germ
1 cup chopped walnuts or slivered almonds
1/2 cup sesame seeds
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
1/3 cup vegetale oil
1/3 cup honey
1/3 cup water
1 (6 ounce) package fried sweetened cranberries or other dried fruits such as cherries, raisins, pineapple or papaya
Heat the oven to 300 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, stir together the oats, wheat germ, nuts, sesame seeds, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Make a well in the dry ingredients and add the oil, honey, and water. Toss the mixture until ingredients are well combined, then spread it evenly on a cookie sheet.
Bake granola for 40 minutes or until lighthly browned, stirring every 10 minutes to keep the mixture from sticking. Let it cool completely, then stir in the cranberries or other dried fruits. Makes 7 cups.

I believe this is Becky Jane's recipe. My kids love it!! :yum:
Peanut Butter Granola
2 Tbs butter
1/3 Cup Peanut butter
(Melt these two ingredients until smooth, over low heat)
Then stir in:
1/3 Cup Honey
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp salt
When all the ingredients are warm and smooth, stir in 3 Cups of rolled oats until well coated.
Put the oat mixture on an ungreased cookie sheet or 9x13 pan. Bake at 375 for approx. 10 minutes -- or until crisp. At this point, you can toss in raisins, dried cranberries, sunflower seeds, etc. if you like. I didn't and it was still very well received. Then cool and store tightly covered.
Enjoy!

3 cups old fashioned oats
1 cup slivered almonds
1 cup cashews
1 cup shredded sweetened coconut
6 Tbsp brown sugar
6 Tbsp maple syrup
1/4 cup butter
3/4 tsp salt
2 cups craisins
Preheat oven to 250
Combine oats, nuts, coconut and brown sugar in a large bowl
Melt butter in small bowl, stir in maple syrup and salt
Combine both bowls and stir thoroughly
Pour out on 2 cookie sheets, cook for an hour and a half, stirring every 20 minutes or so
Cool, add craisins, mix well.
I made this tonight but I was out of fruit and nuts, so I added peanut butter-chocolate chips and mini marshmallows after it was cooled. It was still great, just not quite as healthy
I've varied the nuts and dried fruits quite often, the one I posted is my personal favorite.

I love nuts, but my little one is allergic. I can find granola without nuts, but, of course it's still expensive (even though one of the most expensive ingredients--nuts--are not in there!).
I've never tried to make granola, but now I feel inspired. And hungry. :yum: But it's too late too eat. ;)

Marie,
I would just omit the nuts, and add extra oatmeal. I was short some of the ingredients the last time I made it, so mine was mostly oatmeal and almonds (I know, nuts ) but, I could have made it without the nuts, and just used more oatmeal to fill out the volume. I didn't put quite enough oatmeal in, so the syrup was a bit much, and it took a lot longer to dry out in the oven than it normally does. It was still :yum:

Granola recipe
~Originally a recipe from Missy
Best Granola Ever!
4 cups old fashioned oats
1/3 cup of flaxseed
1 cup chopped almonds
1 cup chopped pecans
½ cup sunflower seeds
½ cup pumpkin seeds
¾ cup smart balance oil
½ cup pure maple syrup (could use honey instead)
1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
½ cup protein powder (can increase to a cup if you are lacking in protein)
½ tsp salt
1/3 cup brown sugar (optional, but I like it!)
1/3 cup wheat germ
½ cup raisins and/or dates
Preheat oven to 325. Spray baking tray with olive oil. Mix oats, 2 kinds of nuts and 3 kinds of seeds in large bowl. In another bowl, combine oil, syrup and vanilla, and then add it to the oat mixture. Stir in the protein powder and the salt. Bake for 40 minutes, stirring often, until oats become golden brown. Immediately after baking, stir in the wheat germ, the raisins and the brown sugar. Let cool in baking tray. YUM!
~ We like this over apple oats. Chop up a tart green apple and put it in a cup of boiling water that you have cooking on the stove. Add ½ cup of old fashioned oats. Reduce heat and cook for 5 minutes. Pour into a bowl and sprinkle with granola. It tastes like dessert and is soooo good for you!

That's how we do it here.. a bit of this and a bit of that.. all though we use Rice Syrup for sweetening, no sugars. ;) We need to make some more up too, and since it's currently VERY COLD here ... ;)

Thank you all again and again. I made another one different from the first and it is just as good. (a very forgiving recipe I am happy about that because I have a hard time following a recipe)
I hope to never go back to store bought cereal. I love this granola
