We're trying to figure out a branch of our family tree and don't quite know how it goes after so far. Here's the deal...
My friend, R's grandmother and dh's grandmother were sisters, so that makes R's dad and my mil cousins. What does that make R and dh? Is it second cousins? Or would R and my mil be second cousins?
Thanks for listening to my babbling. R and I have been friends for a couple of years now but due to my mil's sister passing away this week we just made this connection in our families. Is truly is a small world.

I had to quote it so I could try to keep it in mind as I write
R's dad and mil were cousins
R and mil would be 2nd cousins
R and dh would be 3rd cousins (some people say 2nd cousins once removed :D -- of course, that's really, really Southern -- the people who *know* those family trees ;) )

This is what I would say:
R's grandmother and DH's grandmother are sisters.
R's dad and DH's mom are first cousins.
R and DH's mom are second cousins.
R's dad and DH are second cousins.
R and DH are third cousins.
Clear as mud for ya?
ETA: I must have been typing while Paige was typing. Looks like we are on the same page (we don't do once-removed around here!)

I guess I would disagree with the first two replies. Not sure if there are "right" answers or if it's sort of a regional/cultural thing?
R's g'ma and DH's g'ma are sisters.
This makes R's parent and DH's parent first cousins.
This makes R and DH 2nd cousins.
R and DH's parent are first cousins once removed.
DH and R's parent are first cousins once removed.
Interesting....:-)

Ha! Now try explaining to people that your Aunt is also your cousin and that means your cousins are also third cousins or something of that nature.. All because your Father's cousin married your mother's brother. My inlaws find this downright hilarious.

R's grandma & dh's grandma = sisters
R's parent & dh's mother = 1st cousins
R & your DH = 2nd cousins
R & your MIL would be 1st cousins once removed..
Its how many levels down from siblings, and if one is 1 down and the other is 2 down, it would be 1st once removed..
clear as mud?? (my grandmother was BIG time into genealogy, and loved this sort of stuff!!!)

Or how about this? Your MIL remarries. Her son marries her new husband's daughter. They have a child. So, the stepgrandmother on the child's mother's side is actually his paternal grandmother. And vice versa for his grandfather.
Yes, this really happened. It sounds like a Jeff Foxworthy joke... :D
