It's a long story, but I'll make it as short as possible...

When my daughter Becky adopted Laney from China 18 months ago she needed a variety of therapies, including speech therapy. We were blessed to meet Cari Ebert, a lovely, talented, professional who has many years experience in diagnosing and treating speech and language delays. She also happens to be a Christian, and since meeting Becky she has become a homeschooler.

Fast forward a year. We have been SO BLESSED by Cari's friendly, relational, activity-based approach to speech therapy and the amazing impact it's had on little Laney Kate. AND- it turns out that long before meeting us Cari had been working hard on developing a set of diagnostic tests and therapies which would enable ANY PARENT to diagnose and treat their own childrens' speech and language problems.

1 in 10 children suffer from speech or language delays and NEED diagnosis and speech therapy. Yet diagnosis costs $150-$300 per child and treatment runs $75- $150 per hour and typically requires 150 hours of therapy to complete. That's $15,000+ in most cases!

Cari has asked us to publish small talk, her AMAZING curriculum and we have been so pleased to work with her in this wonderful program. As of today, it's available directly from FIAR for only $150- less than the cost of just diagnosing one child's needs.

The activities are simple, fun, relational and activity-based. EVERY PARENT can do it- and enjoy the process. Jane and I were immediately impressed that it such a similar feel to all of our FIAR products- warm, relational, foundational, activity-based.

small talk will be reviewed in upcoming issues of both The Old Schoolhouse and Homeschooling Today. It has been beta- tested extensively and our own grandchild is a living testimony to how well the program works! You'll be seeing articles by Cari Ebert in upcoming issues of both The Old Schoolhouse and Homeschooling Today and she will soon have her own website: www.homeschoolsmalltalk.com (http://www.homeschoolsmalltalk.com/)

But for now- you no longer need to wait. Speech problems do NOT fix themselves and speech is foundational to communication, social interaction and so much more. In fact- it's essential to EVERYTHING WE DO!

Just follow the link to get started: http://www.fiarhq.com/fiarold/catalog/online.html You'll find it near the bottom of the page. The book is IN STOCK and ready to ship immediately.

I PROMISE YOU you'll be blessed and your children will be better for it. Intended for early childhood, it's usable with children of many ages- typically ages 2 to 7 or so.

Blessings,

Steve - Who can not TELL YOU how excited he is about this amazing product!!!

PS- I think we'll enclose a special surprise gift with the first copies ordered... and I'll ask Cari to autograph the first 10 copies too!

Wow Wow Wow. That is a great program and great deal! Thanks for offering it. Our Anna has finally "graduated" from therapy but we would have loved using Small Talk. I'll keep it in mind for friends.

I'm interested, but would like to evaluate the product first to see if it would meet my child's needs. Would it be possible to view the table of contents and maybe a few sample pages?

Never mind, I found the author's website and found the table of contents and sample pages there!

Oh, my goodness! I just stumbled across this. I saw the samples and it appears to be exactly the kind of thing I've been looking for to use with my youngest son, who has Down syndrome. I've intended to use Straight Talk this year, but we've used FIAR for many years and I do like the FIAR "feel" to the "small talk" samples. I especially like where she says the activities should be spread out to encompass an entire day because, "If you are looking for a program that will provide your child with 30 minutes of intensive speech and language work one or two times per week, then you are actually searching for private speech-language therapy." It sounds similar to my own beliefs about teaching young children.

Is Cari available to answer a question? I'm not getting a lot of support for taking on the speech therapy challenge myself. My son is 4 1/2 and speaks around 150 words well enough that family members can understand him. (He uses 70 or so signs . . . all words that he can also say.) Examples of his speech are "goggy" for "doggie", "Doo-wah" for his sister "Julia", and "appoe doos" for "apple juice". He has just started putting two words together and speaks about himself in the first person. (His name is Joshua and he calls himself "Gaga".)

I'm wondering if Cari feels a very motivated homeschool mother with 13 years of experience could use her book instead of a speech therapist. Besides being an independent sort of person, I must travel almost 100 miles one way for a speech therapy appointment, unless we want to use the school district's services (and we would prefer not to get involved with the school district, as per HSLDA's advice to parents homeschooling special needs students).

We saw a speech therapist once a few months ago and she spent the time blowing bubbles and having Joshua pop them and say "pop". His siblings do that with him all the time and I'm having trouble seeing an advantage to having it done by a speech therapist.

If Cari isn't available for comment, maybe some of you who have taken your kids to speech therapy can tell me the advantage of using a real person over educating yourself through books and videos and doing the therapy yourself, almost continuously.

I'm not trying to be confrontational at all. I am really trying to keep an open mind and educate myself, and I do intend to purchase the book, regardless. It looks like it will mesh really well with Before Five in a Row, which I'm starting with Joshua this year.

small talk was designed for motivated parents like you who just need the tools to get the ball rolling. This curriculum is fun and easy to use and is desgined to become embedded into your daily routine. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any specific questions or concerns. I'd be happy to visit with you about your son any time! My email is cariebert@sbcglobal.net

somewhere I read it wasn't in print at this time?
I hope it comes back soon, because I have several friends looking for a resource like this.

No word from the author. I know her PLAN was to revise the book. BUT- she has had MULTIPLE MAJOR issues in her family with serious illness on the part of her parents and more so I doubt that much has happened or will in the near future.

Blessings,

Steve
