I posted a NEW question about this on post 16 :)

Anyone make their own breakfast cereal? We LIKE cereal for breakfast around here, but it's SO expensive, and we go through it so quickly. Dh suggested maybe we could make our own. Any guidance?

A friend of mine makes her own granola and it's quite yummy. I snagged some of it as it was coming out of her oven. I've been meaning to the get the recipe and will share it when I do.

Not sure if it is cheaper as I believe there is flaked cereal of some sort in it. But maybe with some of the other ingredients stretching it...

I'll call her now. :)

I cut at pasted this from an old thread. We eat it over hot oatmeal and as snacks. I does cost a bit to make, but the recipe makes a huge batch.

~Originally a recipe from Missy

Best Granola Ever!

4 cups old fashioned oats
1/3 cup of flaxseed
1 cup chopped almonds
1 cup chopped pecans
½ cup sunflower seeds
½ cup pumpkin seeds
¾ cup smart balance oil
½ cup pure maple syrup (could use honey instead)
1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
½ cup protein powder (can increase to a cup if you are lacking in protein)
½ tsp salt
1/3 cup brown sugar (optional, but I like it!)
1/3 cup wheat germ
½ cup raisins and/or dates

Preheat oven to 325. Spray baking tray with olive oil. Mix oats, 2 kinds of nuts and 3 kinds of seeds in large bowl. In another bowl, combine oil, syrup and vanilla, and then add it to the oat mixture. Stir in the protein powder and the salt. Bake for 40 minutes, stirring often, until oats become golden brown. Immediately after baking, stir in the wheat germ, the raisins and the brown sugar. Let cool in baking tray. YUM!

~ We like this over apple oats. Chop up a tart green apple and put it in a cup of boiling water that you have cooking on the stove. Add ½ cup of old fashioned oats. Reduce heat and cook for 5 minutes. Pour into a bowl and sprinkle with granola. It tastes like dessert and is soooo good for you!

We make our own granola.. similar to RJ's. Our's is sweetened with brown rice syrup and has oats, dried fruits (whatever I have on hand), barley flakes, sliced almonds.. whatever I basically find in the cupboard to throw in it. Then I cook it in the oven until golden, and store.

I've got a recipe for homemade grapenuts, which I'd really love to try, but I have to convert it to sugar free for my family.. Alas.. ;)

My friend Peg (from here on the boards) makes this; we love it:

Marmee’s Fruit Jumble Granola

(adjusted to the way I make it) J

Stir together in a large mixing bowl:

10 cups quick-cooking rolled oats

1 cup coconut flakes

1 cup wheat germ

Place in a saucepan and heat just until warmed and combined:

2 tsp. ground cinnamon

1 ½ tsp. salt

1 ½ cup safflower oil

½ cup pure maple syrup

¾ cup honey

1 ½ tsp. vanilla flavoring

¼ cup water

Pour liquid mixture over grains and mix with a heavy spoon until just combined. Place granola mixture onto large baking sheets or into a roaster pan. Layer 1 inch thick and bake at 325 degrees for 25 minutes. Remove from baking sheet and place immediately into a large container. (I actually let it cool a little on the pans so there are some chunks, too. But not too long or it’ll stick.) Transfer to a container and let cool completely.

Add into granola mixture: 1 bag of Great Value mixed berries and 1 bag of Great Value dried sweetened cranberries. Combine and cover the granola with a tight lid. Keeps on pantry shelf for 4-6 weeks. Serve with milk or yogurt.

(You can add in all the dried fruit you like – raisins, banana chips, dried apricots, dates, dried apple pieces, etc.)

We make granola, but my kids also like what we call "mueslix".

I grate an apple into a bowl, add a scoop of oats (dry) and top with various dried fruit and seeds (pumpkin, sunflower) or nuts. One dd adds milk and the other adds yogurt. Sometimes I sprinkle dry cereal on for additional crunch. They have eaten it almost daily for over 6 months. It seems pretty healthy to me, and tasty too.

I make my own 7 grain cereal...I think I got the recipe from Hillbilly housewife or some site similar to that. It's really easy to make! I'll post it if anyone wants it.

We also make our own granola. Our children like a very plain not very sweet version that I found in the More With Less cookbook. It is so plain that I was shocked by how much they love it!

I'd love the homemade Grape Nuts recipe!

But now that I've gotten a vitamix, I am not eating the 7 grain cereal anymore, I'm eating green smoothies for breakfast!

7 Grain cereal recipe
http://www.hillbillyhousewife.com/5graincereal.htm

Granola

Makes 3 quarts
250*
1 Hour

Preheat oven to 250*.
Combine in large mixing bowl.

2 c. whole wheat flour
6 c. rolled oats
1 c. coconut (I don't like coconut so I substituted dry milk for this)
1 c. wheat germ
Cinnamon ( this was not in the original recipe but I added a good amount since my family loves cinnamon...just add whatever you think, I just dump some in)

Blend together separately:
1/2 c. water
1 c. oil (I use EVOO)
1 c. honey or corn syrup (no corn syrup for us)
2 t. vanilla (sometimes I add a bit more)
1 T salt

Add blended liquids to dry ingredients and mix thoroughly. Spread out on 2 greased cookie sheets and bake 1 hour, or until dry and golden. Store in covered containers. I have written on my recipe that 1/4 c = 22 g carbs (from when I was dealing with gest. diabetes and had to watch carbs, but I'm not totally sure that is correct)

Options: with same liquids, use 4 c. quick oats, 3 c. whole wheat flour, 1 c. wheat germ, 1 c. soy flour (optional), 1 c. coconut, 1 c. nuts

My children LOVE this...it is not sweet at all to me and I thought they would hate it, but I am always making more for them!

Here is the recipe (http://candacemercyisnew.blogspot.com/2009/03/yummy-healthy-granola.html)i use for granola. I make it once per week and I LOVE it!! This is probably one of my favorite things!! :)

Also, someone on another board recently posted this recipe for homemade grape-nuts, I haven't tried it yet, but several ladies have said it's easy and yummy!

Grape Nuts Cereal

3-1/2 c. sifted whole wheat flour
1 t. baking soda
1/2 c. brown sugar
2 c. milk
2 T. vinegar
1/2 t. salt

Mix flour, baking soda, sugar, and salt. Stir vinegar into the milk and add to flour mixture. Stir well. Spread dough onto greased cookie sheet. You want it about 1/4 inch thick. Bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes. Let it cool for about 30 minutes. Next, grind it in a food chopper. (You don't want the cereal completely dry when you chop it or you will get flour.) Once you are done grinding it, divide it between two cookie sheets, and return to a 300 degree oven for 30-45 minutes, stirring it every 15 minutes. The longer you bake it, the crunchier the texture will be.

Now that I've perused all these recipes (and am printing them out) and am getting ready to try my hand at this, does anyone have a general idea as to how much it costs to make a batch?

Is this what you eat for breakfast or snacks or.........????? I'm thinking about trying to do the granola AND the grape nut flakes to mix together for cereal. Good idea? Bad idea?

How long does the batch of granola last you? And if you tell me that, would you tell me when you use it/eat it?

Thanks!

i double my recipe when i make it because my family loves it. but even then, it only lasts a few days unless i keep an eye on my boys and dh! they will munch, munch, munch on it all the time if i let them! :perplex: i really want to keep it on hand for breakfast.

btw, here (http://everydaygifts.blogspot.com/2008/08/homemade-granola.html) is the recipe i always use, it is pretty similar to others posted.

i'm giving that grape nuts recipe a try today! :)

Paige,
I'm not sure at all how much it costs to make the granola recipe that I posted...I'm terrible at costs...but we buy much of the ingredients at Sam's Club.

We eat it for breakfast and snacks. We eat it both with milk and without. I like to add some to my yogurts.

We don't eat it every day and not all my children eat it...mostly my 7 and 5 yr olds eat it. (and dh and I). So it lasts for a pretty long time. If we were all eating it every day (all 8 of us) it would maybe last a week or less. As it is, it lasts several weeks.

HTH!

Stacy, you'll have to give us an update. How did the grapenuts turn out?

I was hoping to get some granola made today, but since we're most likely going to Atlanta this weekend, I've been frantically working on making my house (which is on the market) look show-worthy
