Do you print anything on them, like the name of the animal - bear or what group it is from - mammal for instance. Or are they ment to just have a picture and nothing else. That is what it seems the manual is saying, but everyone seems to be adding more. I was thinking of putting the picture on one side of the card and just the group name on the other side. This way, after the cards have been sorted, they could easily flip them over to see if they are all right or if corrections need to be made. This would make it a self-teaching game/activity that could be enjoyed anytime. Or is it ment to be done together - discussing and sorting and learning together. I was thinking a little of both. I would just have the cards out and accessable for those spontanious moments and then if my dc can to me we would do them together and if they just sat own the floor and started sorting, that would be ok too.

My advice is to leave the catagory off of the card. That way, you can use the cards in different sorting. Right now, you might be sorting into preschool catagories (like "fur"), but later you might add invertebrates vs. vertebrates, or even go as far as the standard biological classification.

I use these (http://www.ourlosbanos.com/homeschool/printables_science.html) classification cards from Los Banos. Sweet, simple, to the point, not too much extra stuff.

I've also created a similar template in Word for the animals we've needed, that they don't have.

Marcygirl, any suggestions for finding pictures of animals that Los Banos doesn't have?

I made my own-I couldn't find any that I liked.

I found an old Animal Encyclopedia at a garage sale and we made our own.

We put the name of the animal under the picture, but that is all.

We use them for quite a few activities- when we are doing a geography we use them to learn what animals are in that country.

When we were doing habitats we used them to figure out what habitats each animal lived in.

We use them when we were doing Herbivore, carnivore, amnivore.

They are just so many things they can be used to teach

HSS (http://www.homeschoolshare.com/B4FIARACC.php) has classification cards developed specifically for the B4FIAR titles.
