I had started this but fell waaaay behind. I'm thinking of going back & adding all of the animals we (I) missed. Jimmy hasn't done the classification game, tho. We just used the cards when we went to the zoo. "Remember when Danny asked the cow for something to give his mother?" (Yes, our zoo has a farm animals section.) I put the cards into a photo album brag book for easy looking-up.

Here's (http://shannon-songofmyheart.blogspot.com/2007/12/its-zoo-around-here.html)a picture of our animal classification board. I think Jane or someone here mentioned playing a kind of sorting game - Feathers, Fins, Fur. Just have your little ones sort them into one of those 3 categories. I'm going to try that with our 4yod soon. She loves card games!

We do the same thing as Shannon. We do it at the end of the week as review and my own informal testing to see if they were paying attention.

I used these last year with Caleb and we made it into an animal books.

We called "My BFIAR Animals Book".

I used contruction paper for the pages (different colors) and on each page I had him glue a "landscape" representing different animal habitats.

Our pages were...

*Forest
*Beach
*Pond
*Grassland
*Sky (for birds)
*Farm/field
*Dessert/dry land

After we read a BFIAR title I had Caleb glue the animals mentioned in the story to the page that he thought it belonged. I helped him sometimes but most times I let him choose where to paste the pictures.

He enjoyed doing this VERY much and it was a neat keepsake after we read all the BFIAR titles.

He was 3 years old when we did this. I think if I were to do it with him again now that he's almost five I would probably do what Shannon did.

As you are in Australia, you could try finding the playschool song 'Feathers, fur and fins.' It is a great song. We actually have a video (from the tv) of their 'Feathers, fur and fins week. It might be on one of their dvds or cds.

Feathers, fur or fins
Feathers, fur or fins
If it walks on legs or flies on wings
If it runs or crawls or slithers or swims
It's got its place in the scheme of things
Feathers, fur or fins

Feathers, fur or fins
Shell or skin or scale
They're mother nature's marvels
From the ant up to the whale
And if we ever lose them
They won't be back again
So all let's take good care
Of every feather, fur or fin

Feathers, fur or fins
Feathers, fur or fins
If it walks on legs or flies on wings
If it runs or crawls or slithers or swims
It's got its place in the scheme of things
Feathers, fur or fins

The playschool in the car CD has a great version of going on a bear hunt, and it is on one of the videos as well.

How funny. I was *just* looking at the animal classification cards and wondering about how I could use them with my just-turned-3yo ds.

Thanks for the ideas!

How do you make the cards? And, what are they classified by? I've heard mention of them in the B4 manual, but I can't find the section of the book explaining them. TIA.

I just printed them off homeschool share and then laminated them.

I LOVE the idea of the book Ely mentioned:thumb:
I just use Jane's idea in FIAR about animal classification index card box.
