Does anyone have one? I have a child with these allergies coming to a party. Even better, does anyone know somewhere I can buy a cupcake or small cake for her? I'm nervous about being careful enough.

My son is allergic to all dairy, eggs, and nuts. This is the cake I make and everyone loves it! I got it from the book The Joy of Cooking. I've added my variation below the recipe.
Diary Free Chocolate Cake
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 cup + 2 tablespoons sugar
6 tablespoons unsweetened nonalkalized cocoa
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/8 teaspoon salt
Combine and add:
1 cup cold water
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 tablesppon white binegar
3 teaspoons vanilla
Stir until smooth. Scrape the batter into a greased and floured 8X8 pan and spread evenly. Bake at 350 until toothpick inserted comes out clean, about 25-30 minutes. Let cool in the pan on a rak for 10 minues. Slide a thin knife around the cake to detach it from the pan. Invert the cake and let cool.
My Variation
I double the recipe and bake in two round cake pans. Then I frost with store bought chocolate frosting (which you can find without milk)--with a layer of frosting in between the cake rounds. I top the cake with dairy-free semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional, of course--I get these chocolate chips at a natural foods grocery store. You can also top the cake with sprinkles). These variations make the cake look like a real birthday cake.
Enjoy!

As a mom of a peanut-allergic teenager, I first of all want to give you a BIG HUG! You are so thoughtful to be posting this question, Sarah!
I'm always touched when someone calls and asks a question about our son's peanut allergy or if something is safe or not. If I were you, I'd just give this child's mom a call and ask her for a simple recipe so that you can make him/her a special cupcake (or make the whole cake this way!) ~ she may feel better just sending along a safe snack with her child.

I agree with Katie! You are so sweet and thoughtful to be concerned about this child. I am always so thankful when others offer to make something special for my kids, but I always decline, because I do feel better if I'm the one who makes it. I wish you lived closer, because I have a cake AND a bag full of cupcakes in my freezer that I would love to share with you!

Thank you for posting this. My Abby will be one in February and is allergic to Dairy. I have been looking for a cake recipe for her, too.
This is going to get so much harder as she gets older-I am just waiting until she discovers ice cream:unsure:
I know they make soy ice cream, but what will I do when we are out and that is not available? How do you reason with a toddler?;)
