I am curious as to how many of you simply follow the FIAR volume manuals and how many of you add different curriculums to FIAR.

TIA

Welcome Nedra!

I do add in some history for ds7 but I have him join in with ds11 who isn't using FIAR at this time but another unit study curriculum. We also use Story of the World since we have been doing history chronologically.

That said, FIAR is our core curriculum for ds7 and it really needs nothing else. I only add to it because it works for our family and gives my boys projects and read-alouds that can be done together. I really like it when I can find a FIAR book that corresponds to our history study!

I don't add any science or history programs. I feel that I'd never get to our unit study time which is the core of what keeps us sane and stable around here.

I do plan on adding Apologia Exploring Creation Series in the summers, but not along with our regular units.

I also use Story of the World. I like the chronological approach, but of course we are also doing the 'peg' approach as it comes up in FIAR.

BTW, FIAR VOl. 1 was an afterthought for me this year. I pulled it out to use before my boys were too old. The more we do with it, the more it is becoming our core and other things are 'extra'. Love it!

We're doing SOTW (dd is 6) but we only read the book and meet once a month with a couple of other families to do two or three of the projects in the activity book - very low key/relaxed. I will be adding in some basic Texas history since we live in Texas. Also, I found a neat unit on Elections - if I can get some families to join me in doing a mini-co-op, I want to to that next spring since it will be an election year. Other than, we have an assortment of odds and ends and following dd's interests - we just add in if we have the time.

:hi: Welcome, Nedra!

I currently use FIAR exclusively as far as history curriculum; however, we're reading lots of library books on the 20th century this year.

I have added additional history in the past (Mystery of History) only b/c my dd is a history buff. FIAR sparked her interest in history when she was 4yo. :) I plan to go back to MoH eventually; but, for now we're just using FIAR. :)

Btw, where are you in So. CA??? I'm originally from L.A.

We are using FIAR and only adding some of the fun stuff off of homeschoolshare with my youngest girls. My husband is planning on doing some extra science experiment with the girls because he wants to be more involved in schooling and I never seem to have time to prepare for science experiments. But he plans on doing experiments that go along with our FIAR books. Beyond that I think FIAR is great alone.

We do add Math-U-See and A Reason for Writing, but we were using those before we started FIAR and just kept using them because the girls enjoy them.

I do FIAR with Thomas. I use Truthquest history with Thomas and Carrie. Our family REALLY LIKES HISTORY!! I can't imagine NOT doing something for history! ;)

I am very reluctant to add to the FIAR manuals because when I have it's been too overwhelming and than FIAR ends up gradually being shoved out. I prefer to make FIAR our main curriculum and everything springs forth from it. If I add anything to our weekly FIAR book it would be something that goes along with FIAR like a go-along book or stuff from homeschool share or a lapbook from Hands of a Child.

We have a read-aloud time and read stories from the library or books at home that are not part of FIAR. Stories like fables, folk tales, fairy tales ect... I also read a few poems a day. So adding in Story of the World as a read-aloud is something I am considering for next year.

Apologia looks very appealing and I have gone back and forth with questioning if I should get that or not. My neighbor purchased the Astronomy book and said her daughter really enjoys just reading it and looking at it. I may consider just purchasing them and using it as sort of a reference book with a FIAR science lesson or non FIAR weeks.

We don't do FIAR everyweek. I do 27 weeks of FIAR a year the other 9 weeks are review and interest based learning and interesting lapbooks from Hands of a Child.

Thanks for the welcome!

I live in Riverside County, in a town called Mira Loma. I am a 42 year CA native and was born in L.A. County, in the city of Arcadia.

Right now, we add in history that is specific to what we are studying each week. We usually do 2-3 history topics a week. We have volume 1 of SOTW ready, though...so maybe we'll switch over in January. If not, it can wait until next year :)

We use FIAR, but b/c my ds is a history buff we check out books from the library on people/events that interest him. We also love using a timeline!

We use FIAR only but we use the FIAR timeline from the digital store. It works for us in the form of a Timeline Notebook. We live in an apt and don't have space for a wall timeline.

We've been using History for Little Pilgrims. I read it aloud, and they color in the coloring books. Next year, we may add Mystery of History as a read-aloud.
