Here is an outstanding DVD to watch when you row TGTWTP. It is from an award-winning PBS series. The title of the DVD is Tall Blondes and it is hosted and narrated by ABC/20/20's news correspondent, Lynn Sherr. It is a one hour, non-fiction video and has awesome photography and covers all kinds of wonderful info about giraffes. There is even a 5 minute segment on La Girafe's story traveling from Egypt to Paris. The kids loved the video, especially the footage of Lynn staying at Giraffe Manor in Kenya where you can feed giraffes from your hotel room window and from the breakfast table as they peek in through window for handouts.

There are two things that might be considered sensitive subject matters:
1. They show a male bull attempting to mount a female in the wild...there are two pretty good shots of the bull's private parts ready for action...they don't show the actual mating sequence, but DD did notice the male body part showing and asked what it was.

2. There is a brief story and footage about Victor, a captive zoo giraffe, who gets his legs tangled and sprawled behind him and the ensuing attempts to save his life (he can't stand b/c of how his legs are improperly caught beneath him). 3 days into the battle to save him, they finally fashion a hoist and as he tries to stand, he suddenly dies. I think the story occurred in the 1970's.

We checked the DVD out at our local library.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the recommendation and for the heads up about the sensitive subject matter. I wouldn't want to be surprised!

The third thing that I meant to mention on my "heads up" list:

3. There are a couple references to evolution. One was referring to giraffes having existed for millions of years and another was referring to how/why their long necks may have evolved.

In our family we use things like this (the 3 sensitive subject matters) as springboards for discussion, but just thought some might want to know in advance.
