for the harder to find OOP titles?

I don't have
Giraffe that Walked to Paris
Hanna's Cold Winter
Andy and the Circus

There are no bookstores or sales.
They are atleast an hour and a half away. So I would have to buy online.

I don't know if it is still available, but a bunch of us got Hannah's COld Winter by buying a book that had the story in it. It's not quite the original, but it will do if you don't want to spend a lot of $$. Here's the link http://www.fiarhq.com/~gbprnhrz/forum/showthread.php?t=14856&highlight=hannas+cold+winter

Giraffe and Andy are way out of my reach $$ wise. I'm still hoping to get them at a yard sale one day:)

I paid somewhere in the 40 dollar price range for Giraffe. I was going to just wait it out until I stumbled across a great "find". However, it fell into our plans to use the book this year, so dh suggested we search it out.

As for the others.. I'm grateful my library has Hanna's Cold Winter. I'm tempted to ask if I can go on a list should they decide to discard it one day..

Andy And The Circus is usually for sale on used book "places" for 100 or more. All though I saw it in the forty's this week on half.com. It was tempting to purchase, but it wasn't one of the books planned for this year..

i bought andy and the circus and babar on ebay for about $30 each a few years ago.

i noticed henry the castaway and henry explores the mountains on a fellow homeschooler's shelf and about came unglued! she had picked them up at library sale, but didn't realize how coveted they were to the fiar crowd. she offered to give them to me, even after i explained the prices they go for on ebay! i ended up insisting on giving her $20 for the two of them!

the easier to find OOPs i have managed to buy at reasonable prices (under $10) on ebay or thrift stores.

for the other OOPs, i checked them out from ILL and made color copies. the copies and binding ran me about $25-30 each. i would still rather have the actual book, so i continue to keep an eye out at the thrift store!

if you are patient, they do turn up, sometimes in unusual places!

Office Max made me a beautiful color copy, spiral bound, of Babar. I paid $20 for it. I felt it was worth it, since at the time, it was the only FIAR title our library didn't own (now there are 3 or 4 of them :( ).

I won't tell you what I paid for Giraffe and Andy (unless you saw my post last week). I got them at library sales for very good prices. But there are still 6 I'm missing. I wouldn't pay more than $20-$30 for any title, though, no matter how hard it is to find. I have two of the hardest-to-find books and got them cheap. I'm just biding my time and I believe one day I'll have them all!

Unless our financial situation changes radically, I won't be spending $$$ on ANY of the out of print books. I made 1 exception for Higgins Bend as it came NEW from Steve and Jane when they did the special edition of Vol 4.

I will continue to keep my eye open for them and in anthologies, but there are enough lessons in vol 1-3 that we have more than enough even with the out of print titles. Trying not to get caught up in the 'have to have' syndrome.

If was only down to 4 titles I didn't own, I'd probably feel more of the "have to have" syndrome, but I'd also count myself lucky!

Most of the coveted OOP books I have I got off ebay and they are not in the greatest condition. I only paid $20 for them. I have Giraffe and Babar that way.

I noticed a couple said they'd copied the books that were oop and officemax bound them. What about copyrights? Did you have to get permission to copy, or once a book goes OOP is the copyright void? How does that work? Most of the OOP books for FIAR can be gotten at one other local libraries, but I want to make sure if I go the copy route I do it properly. Thanks.

I copied Giraffe, Hanna (before the anthology, bummer) and Andy and the Circus. Kinko's is self-serve for copies and they bound them with no trouble.

If you can get Andy and the Circus ILL, it's cheap to photocopy because it's blue and white and you can use regular bw copying.

Office Max asked me to contact the publisher, and when I tried and couldn't, they copied it for me. Also, if it's for educational use, I believe you are allowed one copy.

there is a "fair usage" clause in the copyright laws. it allows for teachers to make 1 copy of an oop book for classroom purposes only. maybe someone here has the link to that information handy. when i have copied a book i have printed off oop info about the book to show the copiers and stated the "fair usage" exception. some will still not copy it for me, but do not object if i use the self-serve machines. hth.
