I just found a book called The Range Eternal by Louise Erdrich at the library. This story warmed my heart and I loved the Author's note, at the end. This would be a cozy story to be read many times during the end of fall and winter months. A keeper!

I'll be on the lookout for this one....
Have you read Louise Erdrich's essay "The Leap"? It's not a children's lit story by any means, but (I think) it's autobiographical. Her mother was a trapeze artist (wow, actually thinking about it, it may be a good go-along for older kids for Mirette) before she married and had a child. She came home one day to find her house on fire and her daughter trapped upstairs, so she scaled the tree, hung on the ledge of the window, got her daughter, and "leapt" back to safety. There's lots and lots of emotion in it. Eventually, mom winds up blind in her old age and has many "leaps" to make to overcome her disability. It's a great essay -- very thought-provoking and heart-warming.

My library's online catalog is 'down', but I will look for it this week. Thanks for the recommendation, Jane. :)
