So I'm reading through vol. 2 about the vocabulary words and writing them on index cards. Since Gavin is 4.5 I have just always read through the big words without discussing them in depth like you would with an older child, he always asks what something means if he hasn't heard it before (reading out of the Bible w/ him makes me realize how much I don't know myself:lol: ) what do you guys do, wait until they are old enough to read them on their own to write them down?

I have a five year old and this is what we do. I go to homeschool share and they will sometimes have pictures to go with the words. I copy them out or make my own.
For making my own I have found google image to be very useful. My 5 year old is not really reading and he can't write a whole bunch so visual pictures are very helpful for vocab and making lists, lapbooks ect...
Google image is really easy. I put in the word and it gives me a whole bunch of pictures. I choose one that I like and copy and paste it to a Word document. After I have collected and pasted all the images I need I print it off.
For vocabulary I write the word down on a large blank index card, talk about the word and have my son paste the picture on. We put them up on our bulletin board. I review them once in awhile when we put new ones up.

I have my 5yo K guy trace them on the card. I try to get a graphic or picture of some sort and then I write with a yellow marker the word on the other side and he has to trace it.
Then we go through and talk about them and review them. I just figure the tracing of one word can only help his fine motor skills- no biggie.

Here's what I do:
I create a Word table with 2 columns. One column has the words to be defined. The other has definitions.
I will cut out the words & definitions and mix up the pieces. I will have my dc match the definitions to the words. When they are correctly matched I will have my dc glue them on index cards, one word & definition per card. The word goes on the front and the defition goes on the back.

Oooh, yellow marker. Good idea! Now if only there were index cards with handwriting lines already printed on them...
I have been using the homeschool share pages that have the handwriting lines, though last time I made my own using that idea. When we read Papa Piccolo my 6yo asked about words that weren't on the list, so I added those.
For my older boys I have a page where they write the word, definition, part of speech, synonym, antonym, draw a picture and write a sentence. This makes it more age appropriate since we are doing Vol. 1 all together.

I make index cards with a picture on one side and the definition on the other (for when she's older). We use them to review. I lay several cards out, give her a word, and ask her to find it by looking at the picture. We've done this for a few books now and it's working well for us.
For each book, I pick 2-4 words to use for the vocabulary lesson.
