Hello,

I am new to FIAR. I just found the board a few days ago and am enjoying everything here.

Our family has been on the classical education fast track, but I think we jumped the track a few weeks back.

I have known about FIAR for years, but I never took the time to look into it. Now my "baby" is a new eight year old. I thought I was too late for FIAR. But after reading all that I could on this forum, it doesn't look like I am!

I would love to get a copy of FIAR Volume 4. Is it available anywhere? Will it be available in the future? I prefer a hard copy to a digital version if possible.

However, I DID buy the The Bravest of Us All unit study yesterday, since I knew the book was available in our local library. I thought I would give this method a try. We raced over to the library this morning and started "rowing" (getting used to the lingo!) this afternoon. What a JOY this is! Even my 12 year old listened in and began working on a lapbook with us.

We had the best homeschool day we have had in a very long time. :)

Thank you for any direction you can give! Could I still go back through Volumes 1-3? My younger daughter is in second grade. We desperately need to regain the joy in homeschooling again.

Welcome, Caroylnne!! :hi: I'm so glad you had such a wonderful day! FIAR does that for us too!

Volume 4 is out of print permanently...due to rising printing costs and other factors. Several of the books are also becoming out of print - so, with the digital units you can just buy the ones you want to do as you get to them...I know a lot of us like having the "hard copy" but I guess we need to get used to all this digital stuff, because the world really is becoming more and more like this! ;)

I would definitely say you can go back through volumes 1-3. I know a lot of moms who dive deeply into subjects that their older kids are interested in and really do well with doing volumes 1-3 with many different ages! I plan to use them for as long as I can.

Again, welcome! We're glad you're here...I just love it here and have learned so much from these wonderful ladies!

Oh Carolynne! What a treat to read your story of JOY!!!
I hope FIAR continues to bless your journey as much as it has ours!

Welcome to the FIAR world! :hi:

PS - My son is in 2nd grade and using volumes 1-3 and loving it!

:hi: Carolynne,

Welcome! I'm happy to see that you've jumped right in. :)

Candace is correct...Vol. 4 is out of print. The digital units are available for you to purchase as many or as few as you'd like. (I'm rowing Vol. 4 with my 8yo dd this year and we LOVE it...All of the titles have been hits.)

I, too, encourage you to look at Vol. 1-3 in addition to Vol. 4. There are some real gems in Vol. 1-3 that you may want to row with your 8yo...You can always dig deeper if your student wants to explore a particular topic further than what is suggested in the FIAR manual. I suspect that you won't be disappointed.

I look forward to "seeing" you around. :)

Hi!

I am enjoying Vol. 1 with my boys, 11, 8, & 6. Definitely going on the theory that good literature can be enjoyed at any age! We had a few grumbles when we did a short week of Madeline (eww, a girl book), but otherwise they are loving it.

Glad to have you around!

Exactly!

We started FIAR last year, with my 4 year old. Our lessons were pretty basic, though very rich. This year, DS7 (1st grade) is joining us at home, and the lessons are awesome. He loves it. I think your second grader will love it.

I think a 8 yo will love v1-3 also. I am rowing v.1 with my 5 and 7 yo but my 14 yo almost always finds an excuse to be around when we are doing FIAR. Usually she is curled up in a chair near by "reading" a library book, "because the chair is more comfortable for reading then her bed".

I wish I had looked into it when she was younger. I have Above & Beyond to do with her after she finishes the Ocean and Marine life unit she started on her own.

But back to FIAR v.1 my 14 yo has even helped my youngers find duck books to go along with Ping and my 7 yo just decided today that she wants to do a puppet show of the story. She wanted to do individual ducks on popcicle sticks for Ping and all his family. My 14 yo chimed in with the suggestion on putting them in a line as one piece and just using two sticks and then went on brainstorming with the youngers!!! So it looks like we will be doing a Ping puppet show. Oh yeah, they want to do it on Christmas Eve when my side of the family will be over, I am waiting for them to ask if they can do it at for my husband's family on Christmas Day. They have already made the wise eyed boat to put on a stick and gone through several idea of how to do the Yangtzee River.

So yes, if my 14 yo "accidently" enjoys it, rember she's just reading her book in the comfy chair, I think an 8 yo will have a blast.

Welcome and God Bless.

My 14yo often enjoys our FIAR right along with us too! That is the great thing about FIAR- 44yrs. old, 14 yrs. old and on down to my 4yo- we all enjoy it!

HI and welcome!

I just wanted to chime in like the others that 2nd grade in a great age for vol 1-3! I have a five and seven year old. We did Before Five in a Row a few years ago and still sometimes go back and re-row them! (ex: When "The Big Green Pocketbook" had the lapbook) They find things they never payed attention to when they were younger. So, again, these stories are really for all ages! Good Luck!:)

Hi Carolynne!:hi:

I am another mom using Vol. 1-3 with a 2nd grader. He loves it and it's the only thing in his school day that he asks to do! BTW, my 11 year old was hiding behind the sofa (trying to scare us while reading ) and was rather enjoying our FIAR story. He picked it up and read it again to himself when we were done! So they can have an appreciation for FIAR even when they're that "cool preteen" age!

THere are so many great lessons and books in Vol. 1-3. They would be so great for your 8 yo. I have an 8 yo dd and we are doing vol. 4, but also wil hit some 1-3 titles that we have missed in the past.

Thank you, Everyone, for your very kind words of encouragement. We completed day 2 of our FIAR journey with The Bravest of Us All. And yes, we ALL enjoyed it--including the twelve-year-old who listened in and also worked on a lapbook. (Our first lapbook experience too!) After your encouragement, I am excited to try volumes 1-3 also.

I don't want to make a total committal statement about FIAR yet as right now it seems too good to be true. But I can say that this is just the oasis that our family needed. I LOVE it so far.

I probably should ask this question in another thread, but is there a way to search the archives of this forum? Thank you, again. :)

Carolynne,

The archives right now are only for the titles. You have to be signed in to see them. But, if you're signed in, you should see them on the main message board page toward the bottom. Hope that helps!

I have found it helpful to use the search option on the top tool bar. This search option will give you information from all the posts in the system..old and new. I have done searches for a specific book, or other searches where something interests me using keywords. But you are certainly welcome to ask bunches of questions. We love talking and helping about anything and everything.

Also check out homeschoolshare.com for extras for each title.

Carolynne, I'm wondering if you're looking for the archives of all the conversations about FIAR?? (other than the books themselves) Those are not available. These boards are a new server/format (in the Spring, I think) and all the old stuff was lost with the old boards. So, the current "archives" are only the FIAR book archives. You can search what's here now, though.
If there's something you can't find an answer to, post it and give it 24 hours on these boards...you'll have a bunch of new answers!!!
Enjoy!
