I have looked at the archives but was just wondering what you all have done for this book that was really memorable for your kids.

Well, to be honest, we just followed Jane's lessons. :) They adore the book and we had a lovely time.

We have done the lessons Jane provided, and they are lasting and memorable. Just yesterday, my daughter asked a friend if her clock with a deer head ornament on it, (German clock) was from the lowlands of Ireland. It was great! They also talk about cross-hatching in all illustrations, and in art lessons where we talk about shading.
Stick with the book, it is excellent!

It was years ago, but this was one of our favorite books. My son insisted on getting a kilt, so I went to Walmart and bought a length of cheap cotton plaid faberic and he had a kilt. :D We'd found a website telling how they were put on and followed those directions. I didn't do any sewing on it...just left it as it came. He wanted to wear that everywhere!
We also had a chance to hear real bagpipes at that time. You might check around your area to see if there would be a chance like that for you.

Ditto! My dc LOVE cross-hatching and point it out every time they see it. Just yesterday my dd decorated her notebook cover for The Pumpkin Runner and drew Joshua's hat using the cross-hatching technique. :)

We are getting ready to row this book too. There is a brand of Scotch shortbread that is sold at Target that I just picked up. You might be able to find it in other stores too, but I know for sure that Target carries it. You can order it on the net too, but it is a lot more expensive that way. Anyway, it is called Walker's Shortbread and it comes in a "tartan" package. Very cute. I have bought a couple of packages just to munch on while reading our story. I know....it's not very creative, but still...it makes a nice tie-in!

I also sewed a very basic kilt from tartan (plaid) found at Wal-Mart. I was able to make 2 kilts for about $2 dollars. Since the weather is colder, you should be able to find a Tammy (Tam O' Shanter) in the hat dept. too. I found one for just a few dollars. It does not match the kilt I made, but the colors are similar and Hillary will never notice!

We listened to Scottish music ("Scotland the Brave") and my daughter still likes to sing it.

Well, we named one of our kids after Wee Gilis but you probably don't want to go quite that far. :roflol:
