Does anyone have a neat horse craft they could share with me? I've been searching for one to do the week we row one of the horse books and haven't seen anything that I just love!

Thanks!

This may be a little larger project than you are thinking, but once we made stick horses out of a large wool sock. It's been years, (I was a kid!) but I'll try to remember how we did it. ;)

First we stuffed the sock very full, (with old cut up pantyhose I think... )and attached it to the stick by putting the stick inside and then tying it on somehow. It may have been glued inside, too. We attached felt triangles (one straight side glued or sewn on curved forward like a "C") The mane was yarn, and I think it was sewn on in loops. We sewed on button eyes, and made a halter and reins out of twine or rope. There may have been some kind of mouth or nostrils too, but I'm not sure what we used. OK, so they weren't beautiful, but they were a lot of fun to "ride."
I'm sure my memory is not terribly accurate, but that's something like what we did.

If you want a simpler version, go to http://www.kinderinfo.com
and scroll down to see a stick horse craft idea using a wrapping paper tube, and paper head.

Also, look at www.colorofhorses.com/creative-corral/
and go to the section on horse crafts, or to http://www.bluebonnetvillage.com/horse.htm

One thing we have done with kids at horse camp is decorate horse shoes. The kids loved it. They can use beads, glittery stones, etc. These things can be held onto the shoe with a thin wire. They are beautiful decorations too:)

Speaking of horse shoes. You can take tin foil and have the kids help you fold it into horse shoe shapes and then fold a small post out of tin foil to throw the horse shoes on. Makes for an easy and fun horse shoe game while studying horses. :)

My dd went to a horse themed b-day party & the mom had made a simple horse "costume" for each of the girls.
She took a head band, attached ears that she made out of felt triangles and tied a bunch of yarn between the ears to make the mane.
Then she had a tail made out of long pieces of yarn & tied it around their waists with another piece of yarn.
They turned out very cute and girls had a great time playing horse there and at home.

By the way, what is your horse's name? I am hoping one day to own a horse. It's been a dream of mine forever, it seems.

I just got an e-mail from Amazon about this coming out in a couple weeks:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/048646363X/ref=pe_pe_5050_6551950_pe_snp_63X

And as soon as I saw it I thought, "okay, who was looking for horse stuff?"

This past winter I purchased a Melissa and Doug Horse Stable Stamp Set from a Highlights store in Dallas. I see that Amazon carries them also for $9.99. I'd do a link if I could figure it out. Sorry! This has been a much used craft set at our house. Not a big investment, a craft that can be used over and over and one that is good to use with other crafts. I'm looking forward to using it in a lapbook this year.

Thanks, ladies! I'm checking out all your ideas...thanks so much!! :)

Jen, that is funny you mention the horseshoe thing - I had just seen that idea and wrote it in my planner. (we were homeschooling planning sisters separated at birth!)

I love the stamp idea too. I just saw a Melissa and Doug set with dinosaurs at TJ Maxx the other day and wanted to get it for our dinosaur unit coming up in October. So many great things, so little time (and money!)
