I've planned for my dc to make their own Roxaboxen next week...Here's what I'm going to give them:

* Large piece of corrugated (sp?) cardboard ~ FREE! (I got a 3' x 3' piece from Aldi's. I'm sure that you can get a piece from any grocery store.)

* Bag of rocks at Dollar Tree for $1 ~ I picked up a bag of multi-colored rocks in earth tones. They're in the section with the vases.

* Things I have on hand in our craft supplies: glue, pipe cleaners (for ocotillo), clear buttons for dessert glass & popsicle sticks for crates or whatever else my dc create

HTH!

That is a lovely idea. No surprise coming from you!

My boys took large pieces of drawing paper and made maps. I'm printing this idea for Kyle's turn with Volume 4. He'll love it!!

Thanks Kendall!!

I was planning to do this too! I think I'm going to keep mine in a cardboard box...I am collecting rocks and various other things like you mentioned for my kids to use! FUN!!

So is this more like a 3-D map they're making, or a little cardboard house being decorated? Either way it sounds cool!

...They'll make the former.

Hopefully, I can remember to take & post pictures.

Candace --- I like the box idea. I don't know what I'm gonna do with their finished project...What does one do with a 3' x 3' piece of cardboard with rocks glued on it???!

We let the kids make a Roxaboxen in the desert behind our house. :) They had a lot of fun finding rocks (being careful before they picked them up of course, you never know what may be living under a rock around here. ) and creating a little town. They had a house, a store and of course, a Jail.

Have fun!

Now, Linda...You know that we don't all have the AZ desert in our backyards. That's  that your dc got to take advantage of their setting. :thumb:

My boys made a Roxaboxen in our back yard, using sticks to outline their buildings. Actually, I guess Jennifer joined in with them!;) So, we don't "need" a desert for Roxaboxen!

I will be posting pictures on my blog, soon.;)

 Yep. Exactly what I was thinking. Kendall, you come up with some great fun for your troops!

I just wanted to add that Roxaboxen is one of my guys' favorite FIAR titles...coming in a very close second to Higgins Bend. :thumb:

We did something similar, Kendall. We used shoebox lids and glued sand to the inside. (MESSY! ;) ) Then they plotted out the "town" with the stones you described. They had fun lining the paths and making the "houses". I gave each of them some of that bagged (fake) seaglass to make the one house. We even added a little flag on a toothpick for the mayor's house. We used scrappy flower picks I had to add the flora. They loved doing these and still have them! (We rowed this right after Volume 4 came out!)

Speaking of backyard Roxaboxens ... when the leaves fall, you can RAKE house outlines! We did this a couple years. Obviously they only last overnight, LOL, but it's lots of fun. We moved on to raking labyrinths through the leaves.

Mom loved this, as the caveat was we eventually had to clean it all up ourselves.
