Hi! I am new to posting on the boards but not new to FIAR. I am doing FIAR for my 6 year old ds. I am sure this question has been asked before? I was just wondering how long it took you to plan one book?

Weeellll, I'm one of those "grab the book in the morning and run with it" type of rowers. So, uh, 2.5 minutes? I'm extreme, though. ;)
I usually plan four books at a time. It usually takes me about an hour to decide which lessons to use from each book, decide what if any projects we'll do and write a supply list, decide if we need any worksheets or coloring pages (finding them on the internet takes anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour or more depending on what I'm looking for and how hard it is to find) and typing the whole thing up and putting it in my binder.
I spend a weekend or so before our school year starts planning out which titles we'll do on what weeks and when we'll take scheduled breaks. We school 4 weeks on 1 week off with longer breaks for Christmas and spring break. So, on the off week, I plan the next for 4 books from my list. :thumb:

I plan my entire year at one time...My dd is doing Vol.4 and my ds is doing Vol. 1 & 2...(This is the first year I am not schooling them together.)...It took me @ 5-6 hrs. to plan my entire FIAR year for both of them. This includes writing out what topics will be covered for each FIAR title (no details) and pulling extras from the web, the FIAR archives & my general hs file.

Hi Debi :hi: Welcome to the boards.
I figure that if you combine all the time I spend planning per book, it's probably an hour. Now, that does vary at time. Usually I have an idea of a book I want to row b/c it's one we have, it's one the library has, its season, its topic, it's one I know my girls will enjoy. I usually read through the manual and the Christ. Char. Supplement and get some ideas. Sometimes at that point, I'll go ahead and figure out exactly what I'm going to do or sometimes I'll wait until the night before the lesson or the day of the lesson to figure out exactly which ones I'm going to do. Usually the weekend before we start (and I'm trying to get better about planning several books at once this way), I get on the internet (Enchanted Learning) and print out maps and flags for the country and any other worksheets that may be a good fit.
I will confess that I'm *still* trying to figure out the "best" way to work it. Of course, that's assuming that there is a *best* way

when I rowed before I spent about 5 minutes per book and about 5 minutes to write a supply list categorized by the day I was going to use it...
I knew which subject I did on which day so I just read thru and put a small mark in the manual at the title of the activity we were going to do. Instead of defacing the manual, I have an easy record of what has been done and just needs to be reviewed for when I row again this year.
