you were going to travel the world with FIAR? I know Apple Pie is cool, but that is more fun during apple season when like October.
I was thinking of starting with Mirette just because it looks fun and doing the Niagara one for even more fun (as a go along).
So, what would you start with to embark on your world travels?

Heather,
We're starting with Ping - mainly because my dc are younger and it's one of their favorites (and mine too!) BTW, thanks for sharing your Around the World idea in an earlier thread - you inspired me!
Happy travels!

Assuming you have Vol. 1 - 3:
I would pick a country and start there, and travel around the world from there. For example, you could start with Mirette, then visit Madeline and the Giraffe That Walked to Paris. Take a Glorious Flight across the channel and hitch a ride with Mr. Gumpy and Peter Rabbit up to Scotland to see Wee Gillis. Cross the English Channel again to Holland and become Strong and Good. Step southward and visit Ferdinand in Spain. He get's so lonely out there among the flowers. Next stop off in Germany and buy a New Coat for Anna. (Somewhere in here you'll have to help the Duchess bake her cake, of course.) Turn south into Italy and catch the Clown of God juggling for Papa Piccolo and the kittens. Stop off in Poland and share some strudel with Mrs. Katz and Tush. Next, catch Another Celebrated Dancing Bear performing in Russia. Then, it's on to China and the Yantzee River for a light dinner with Ping and his 42 cousins. Before heading back to the States, stay over in Japan and wear your Red Clogs to take Grandfather's Journey. Then, once you cross the Pacific, you'll want to trek north to Ungava Bay and spend one Very Last First Time before visiting the Bee Tree up there in the Yukon Territory. Make your way to the East coast by Climbing Kansas Mountains and getting your Three Names in those great prairie states. Stop off in Ohio to have a lemonade with Lentil before heading south to Follow the Drinking Gourd, find out Who Owns the Sun and take a gander at Daniel's Duck. Travel Down, Down the Mountain until you reach the Appalachians and try on your Rag Coat, while being Young in the Mountains. Wade in the Chesapeake while learning All Those Secrets of the World with the Wild Horses of Sweetbriar. Don't forget to sample the lobster rolls in Connecticut on a Night of the Moonjellies. Stop by New York City to see the Little Red Lighthouse and be Warm as Wool. Next, it's north to New England where you'll be Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening for Cranberry Thanksgiving under an Owl Moon. Then, it's on to Massachusetts, where Paul Revere takes his Midnight Ride, being sure to Make Way for Ducklings. End your trip up in Maine where you can see Miss Rumphius and the Finest Horse in Town.
(Can you tell I just did a travel brochure for my one class? ;) )
Blessings!

Well, then, you'd have to stop on by Australia for some Pumpkin running, and try on your Grass Sandals while in Japan. Get a good photo of the Hatmaker's Sign while in England (or Boston, for that matter.) Don't forget to keep warm during Hanna's Cold Winter in Hungary nor to visit Angelo in Itlay before leaving Europe. After traveling to Canada with vol. 1-3, you'd better stop in Idaho to mail some postcards while you're Mailing May and visiting Cowboy Charlie in Montana. Then head south to Roxaboxen, Arizona while watching out for Gullywashers out there in the Southwest before turning East. While along the Mississippi River, be sure and see Higgens Bend Song and Dance for a bit of entertainment. Head north to Wisconsin and take a trip back down the river on The Raft. Lastly, while up there in cold Vermont, be sure and stop by Snowflake Bentley's some snowy winter evening for hot chocolate and a slide show! (Arabella's islands could be Pacific, Australasian or Caribbean, so take your pick.)
We also rowed Owl Moon and Katy during our trip to New England, just because it was Winter when we were "there" and they fit in better there than any "place" else we'd been. My son thought Mike Mulligan ought to be in New York, too, because that's where the "big buildings and roads and canals are." ;)
There, betcha didn't think I could do it, did ya?!?
Blessings!

That's so neat!
Hey, are there any books in the Northwest? I've only rowed Vol. 2, and started Vol 3 this spring. So we haven't done 1 or 4.
We read "Apples to Oregon" (I think that's the title), so that would be a good Oregon Trail book. Books about Balto would be good for Alaska. We have a "step in to reading" book about Balto that my kids love.
Any other ideas?

Cowboy Charlie is in Montana and Mailing May is set in Idaho, but they are both vol. 4 books.

Well, Suz I copied that and kept it! We will have done about a year of science themes (lots of animals and botany) by Christmas. I'd like to think about rowing this way for awhile after that!! Thanks for the idea!!

We'll be taking a closer look at geography this year because my six year old is infatuated with maps. So, I decided to combine Galloping The Globe with FIAR. They suggest an introduction week to geography and what book do they suggest? How To Make An Apple Pie, which we did, and the boys LOVED last fall.
At the time we couldn't find an apple orchard to go to, which was a big bummer. About three weeks after we rowed it turned out that one apple orchard about 15 minutes away was still open. So we took our trip then, and when we were eating the apples we selected my son decided to prattle off the math fact from HTMAAPASTW. It cracked us all up.
If you skip the intro they start you in Asia with China first, which would mean Ping! We've all ready rowed Ping, he was our very first row with FIAR, and we had SOOOOO much fun. I was debating looking for another book on China, but who can resist a friend like Ping?
