I know in the past years I have seen a thread on how some of you spend time counting down to midnight by playing games 1 hour decorating cookies or passing out a small gift to the kids can someone help me find a thread on this or just share your ideas on how to keep the kids enertained until midnight.

thanks raye

And the year before.

I haven't planned this year's and not really sure what I want to do. Pondering and praying about it.

Here's what we did last year:

4pm Make Happy New Year's banners, party hats and noise makers
5pm Make/color calendars - printed them off from DLTK kids
6pm Make pizzas, play some card games while they bake
7pm Glow games - we turned off all the lights and played tag, hide and seek and keep away with glow stick wands, necklaces and bracelets
8pm 1st half double feature movie
915pm Intermission and snacks
930pm 2nd half double feature movie
1130pm Movies over, dressed in pjs, party hats on, banners hung, noise makers at the ready, ball dropping on tv
12am Party time
12:30am bedtime

I had a bag with a written clue and a physical clue for each activity. For example, for the pizzas, the bag had a clock face with 6 o'clock on it. The clue was something like "I've got flour, cheese and yeast. Make me, bake me and you'll have a feast." Inside the bag was the pizza cutter and napkins. I had gathered up some of our card games, like Fast Hands, Sherlock and Castle Keep to keep us busy while the pizzas baked. They're each the type of game that only takes a few minutes to play a round, so they were perfect time fillers.

Between my dad and the library sale, we had 6 or 8 new DVD's to choose from last year. I went through them and chose the ones with the best lengths to fit into our party time. When I realized I couldn't quite fit two movies in without extra time, I added the intermission time instead of letting them munch during the first movie......

Now, my dc are 8 and 11, so a nap in the afternoon was all they needed to keep them going through the evening. I know some families stop at 9 or so, as the dc are too tired to continue. My night owls wanted to keep going. I think they would've partied till dawn had I let them!

Blessings and Happy New Year's!
Suz

We could learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names.
All are different colors, but they all have to learn to live in the same box.

There's a small post in the Archives as well. My children aren't permitted to stay up until midnight so they'll be up until 9, or if they are REALLY lucky 10ish, and we'll set the clock forward. We'll probably start counting down from Noonish and we'll do (in no particular order):

2010 Glasses craft
Make pizza
Play Yahtzee Free For All
read comic books
Watch a video (I may go rent or purchase a new one for the occasion)
Time Capsule (maybe)
Poppers for the actual moment..

Because my ProClick needs emptying I'm considering making confetti balloons for the event as well.

This is what we did last year, along with my silly rhymes.

12:00 PM
feed the kitty (game), africa puzzle, candy
Here is a treat, for you to eat, while we feed the kitty and visit africa, with a sweet!

1:00 PM
make & eat nachos, blink (game), candy
Let's make nachos together, won't it be fun, and then we'll play blink and eat candy, when we are done!

2:00 PM
zingo (game), do u know? (game), pooh puzzle
Do u know how to play zingo? Would you like to do a Pooh puzzle also?

3:00 PM make noisemakers, fireworks craft, tom & jerry
While Tom & Jerry run around, let's make something that makes a sound!

4:00 PM what's gnu (game), picture purr-fect puzzle, relish tray
While daddy makes our relish tray, we'll play what's gnu & do a purr-fect puzzle today!

5:00 PM assemble & bake pizzas, start tinkerbell
Let's make our pizzas very well, and then start watching Tinkerbell!

6:00 PM continue tinkerbell, eat candy
Let's keep watching Tinkerbell while we eat, and have this candy for a treat!

7:00 PM play blokus, pets, fireworks
Next we'll play Blokus and the Pets game too, then here are some fireworks for us to do!

8:00 PM qwirkle, sorry sliders, fireworks
You wanted to play sorry, I wanted to play qwirkle, let's play them both, but not in a circle!

9:00 PM prince caspian, fireworks, popcorn
Here is a long movie to watch as we count down the hours, and also some nice sparkly flowers!

10:00 PM fireworks, movie, candy
Let's take a movie break - with sparklers we'll play, and then continue our movie, till the end of the day!

11:00 PM finish prince caspian, fireworks
It's the last hour of the day, so let's finish our movie, and then play with fireworks, which is so groovy!

12:00 AM happy new year, fireworks, bedtime
It's the new year at last, it's 2009, now it's time to go to bed, so in the morning we can rise & shine!

Although my children don't have trouble staying up until midnight, we have had a really rough year, I wanted to ring in this new year with much joy in our hearts.

Here are my cheesy riddles to go into our little bags (thanks Michele for the great visuals on your blog and all of you for the fun ideas!)

***

It is noon and only 12 hours to go!
Then it will be 2010 you know!
I am sure we are not home, because we have an appointment you see,
but when we get home it will be fun and you'll be filled with glee!

Until then, enjoy thinking of the things to come!
When we play fun things and fill our tummies with somethings yum!

However, while you wait, enjoy some funnies to put your mind at ease,
of the orange cat who who is always sure to please!

Answer: New Garfield comics!

***

Wow! An hour gone by and how fast it went!
It is now 1pm and time's well spent!

Can we forget what this day is? I do not think so.
But just in case, lets make something with little round things on a string before we go!

Answer: Make New Year's beaded bracelets

***

It is 2 o'clock already? The day is more than half done!

I think we should do something that will sweetly fill the house,
and reminds us of a book about a quirky little mouse!

If you can not remember, let me help you think,
This little guy loves one with a cup of milk to drink!

Answer: Bake cookies!

***

It is now 3 o'clock and we are all sure busy!

I think it is time for drawing that is not done by you or me,
but perhaps by something like the t.v.!

This game we have not tried, but I am sure it is great,
because when mommy and daddy were kids we had to finish drawing before it was too late!

Answer: Play Disney Pictionary!

***

4 o'clock and time is sure chugging along!

Let's not doze off in a dream!
How about Wii try something a little more Extreme?!

A little climbing and biking, a little surfing and jumping,
I am sure this fun game will get our blood pumping!

Answer: Play Wii Extreme Challenge

***

Now we are really feelin' alive! And my goodness it is already 5!

A new year ahead and so much to think about,
I am sure we've so much things to figure out!

What's on your mind?
Any dreams in your heart?
Think about it, now is the time to start!

Anything in this coming new year you'd like to do?
Let's write a little something to read when 2010 is thru.

Answer: Write a letter of goals, ideas, dreams, and other things on our mind for the coming new year!

***

The time is now 6 o'clock and I am thinking our
tummies are rumbling for some tomato basil soup and french bread to devour.

Answer: Eat dinner

***

Whew! 7 already?! My, time is surely passing fast!

I am thinking it is time for a game where you must not finish last!
Whether by car, bike, or skates, you'll want to be going fast!

Answer: Play The Great Race

***

8pm and isn't it great! We are getting there and it is not quite that late!

I am thinking we should sit back and enjoy a movie of course!
It is based on a book we are loving, because he is a monster of sorts,
but you must always remember our friend Crusoe is no ordinary horse!

Answer: Watch the Water Horse

***

9 o'clock and I don't think we have quite finished the plot!

How about a treat that is not very hot.
It is a little frozen that we've always seem to got,
Vanilla in a glass, topped with something that bubbles a lot!

Answer: Have root beer floats!

***

10pm and I am thinking we're getting a bit sleepy.
How about we play a mystery game that is not all that creepy!

Was it the dog who took the ball? Or the fish who took the bear?
Let's find the who and the what, we already know the where!

Answer: Play Clue Jr.

***

11 o'clock and only an hour to go!

What are we gonna do next, I bet you'd like to know!
It is time to just let the rhythm flow!

Get that bass, get that guitar,
bring out the drums, and now we are real rockstars!

Famous Five are who we are
only made of Lego and we are stars!

Answer: Play Lego Rock Band

***

Midnight and you see,
We all made it to 2010, YIPEE!!

Lets make some noise no longer inside but out,
and ring in the new year with some poppers and shouts!
