Monday: Social Studies

Family Relationship: Talk about Father and Son

  • Father's wisdom
  • Son believes him and admires him
  • Sons labor of love, p. 21
  • Son finding out hard truth of slavery (how would you feel if you were not free?)
  • Son knowing father can't control everything
  • Going on with and making something out of his life

Tuesday: Language Arts

List Making

  • List the qualities of Big Jim from the reading (what was Big Jim like?)
  • List words on paper as you remember them together
  • Print word with symbol picture beside it ... i.e., BIG HANDS!

(add to the list as we remember more through the week. Be on the look out for Big Jim characteristics.)

Wednesday: Art

Discuss the artist who was 14 years old when she wrote and illustrated this book.

Her paintings are simple and strong. Show a picture with fine details to contrast and show the simplicity. Filled with strength and emotion.

How does she do this?

Action and color

  • What colors are on the pages?
  • New colors: Chartruese and mauve
  • Do the pictures of the sun make you feel warm? What colors did she use for this? Shadows and bright light.

Thursday: Applied Math

Counting

  • count pickets of fence pgs. 7 and 21
  • count stars on p. 9
  • count flowers on p. 17
  • count tree stumps on p. 25

Use story motif to make cards for addition for 2s with answers on back

Friday: Science

  • Senses:
    • smell
    • hearing
    • touch
    • feeling
    • sight

Seasons

name the characteristics of spring and summer

Memory Game:
